I'm a graduate Global Engagement Officer at LBU, passionate about connecting people and cultures through study abroad and global opportunities. I focus on creating engaging marketing and social media campaigns that inspire students to explore the world and step outside their comfort zone. My own study abroad adventure in Australia sparked my love for global experiences and somehow, that curiosity and passion led me to this role, where I get to inspire others to explore, connect, and embrace the life-changing experiences that come from studying abroad.

I graduated in Media, Communication and Cultures from Leeds Beckett University as a mature student, a journey that proved it's never too late to chase my passions and goals! Originally from Romania, I spent most of my life in Italy before moving to the UK five years ago. I speak five languages, though sometimes they all decide to make a guest appearance in the same sentence - multilingual brain problems (BYE-lingual!!)

Outside of work, you'll find me enjoying cinema, dance, roller skating, and volleyball - but always curious and up for a new hoppy tbh! I also perform as a dancer (hip-hop freestyle, salsa and bachata, afro-fusion) and commercial actress, which lets me blend creativity, movement, and storytelling, things (that are NOT things) that make me feel most alive!

What are the best things about studying in Leeds?

From personal experience, I chose to study in Leeds because the moment I stepped into the city, it made me feel like home away from (multiple) homes. There's just this indescribable feeling, you know it when it's there... and I trusted it. That feeling brought me to Leeds and kicked off my university adventure!

What I also love about Leeds is its endless little discoveries. There's always a cute café (as an Italian coffee lover this was very important) or a hidden gem waiting to be found, like the first time I stumbled upon Left Bank and suddenly an ordinary day becomes something special.

Have you been involved in any social activities?

Yes!!! During university, I threw myself into as many social activities as I could. I joined the dance society, taking part in both classes and competitions, and the surf society. After a surf trip, I volunteered at the same surf house in Portugal over the summer, building my surf skills, helping with social media and customer service, and joining in on trips and countless social events. Every day felt like a new discovery!

I also got involved in the Global Village, where being part of an international community inspired me to become later on, a Global Ambassador. That journey eventually led me to my current role as a Global Engagement Officer, helping organise amazing events for students from all over the world. Looking back, it's amazing to see how it all came together. I simply followed my curiosity, got involved wherever I could, and it led me to opportunities and experiences I could never have imagined.

What are your plans for the future?

Professionally, I plan to continue growing my skills in communications and digital marketing, with a focus on education and small companies/startups that have a meaningful purpose and creative flair! I want to help enhance storytelling, carry forward impactful legacies, and create stories that connects internationally. One of my dreams is to take this to the next level by building an open-minded, global community on my social platforms, while also organising mindfulness and inclusive events.

Personally, I'm excited to keep exploring my journey as an actress and dancer, and taking those fun bus billboard moments further into a commercial acting career. It's all about curiosity, exploration, and seeing where the journey leads!!

What advice would you give to someone from your country?

Okay, let's talk as my mum would do on this first part: TAKE VITAMIN D DAILY, especially in winter, the darkness is real, and you'll probably notice it straight away if you arrive in the UK in the September intake.

If you ever feel like you don't belong, or that something seems too hard to face, remember to take it day by day. Showing up, even just a little, especially when you're scared, counts more than you think. There's time to rest when your body asks for it, but there’s also time to challenge yourself, whether it's going to the cinema alone or having coffee in that café you've been wanting to try.

And speaking of showing up, the university is full of opportunities to connect. The Global Village that yes, I work there now, but I was also a student participant, organises events like Global Cafés, sports sessions, hikes, festive trips, and so much more. Just showing up is the first step. Each small step opens doors to friendships, discoveries, and experiences you couldn't have imagined. Curiosity and courage will carry you further than you think and sometimes, the tiniest leap leads to the most unforgettable adventures! Be curious, and most of all, be yourself, always!!

Your fellow international buddy, Anca.
