This morning we got up and had a nice Indian breakfast which, upon our request, includes toast and eggs for those who are not as fond of the local food. Setting off around 10am we arrived at the Pune badminton centre, home of the Poona District Metropolitan Badminton Association. ‘Poona’ is actually the original name of Pune; it was changed in 1978 but the association decided to keep the original name. We had a lecture in which we learnt about badminton and that it was founded in 1871 by British army officers in Pune and spread from there. Badminton is one of the most played sports in India, second to only cricket. Following the lecture, we played some small games of badminton and then wrapped it up to travel to ISMS.

At ISMS we had lunch. A couple of us got to try food in which they had not held back on the spice which was really nice. I didn’t find it too spicy and found it added to the dish. After lunch we had a lecture in Leeds Beckett Hall, which is a modern lecture room similar to those in the School of Sport. The lecture was taken by Dr Ajit Mapari, who is an Exeter University alumnus and a sports scientist who has his own sports medicine centre facility in Pune. During the lecture we learned how India is developing to produce more elite sporting success and his role within this. Most lectures we have had place a large emphasis on winning Olympic medals, whereas UK sport has more of a focus on keeping a physically fit and a healthier nation. After this lecture we went into the yoga studio and tried to learn another dance; this one was slower but the technique for the dances was harder. We still need plenty of practice if we expect to be any good on the last day! We came back for dinner and then left to play the football game against the ISMS students. The pitch we played on was beautiful and we had two good games of ISMS vs Leeds Beckett. Everyone got involved and seemed to enjoy the game. Credit to John who scored an absolute screamer, Arjen Robben style, and to Zack who was man of the match.

Everyone after the football
