Interdisciplinary Education placements

Located in the Carnegie School of Education, the Department of Interdisciplinary Studies allows students to explore and interrogate educational practice within a wider context. While these courses don't directly come with Qualified Teacher Status (QTS), students will be able to progress to a range of postgraduate QTS courses or employment roles within educational settings and beyond.

Our Interdisciplinary Courses

Students within the department generally (although not exclusively) progress to careers in educational settings, alternative educational provision, social work, youth work, educational psychology and teaching.

While studying in the Carnegie School of Education, students can expect to experience a variety of professional settings within wider education. This equips our students with the state-of-the-art skills, knowledge and attributes that are expected within professions relating to education, healthcare and beyond.

Students within interdisciplinary studies are provided with professional experiences in a wide range of course-specific partnerships set up with employers and educational settings across West Yorkshire. Whether special educational needs (SEN) schools, primary schools, alternative provision, nurseries or wider cultural institutions, the professional experiences we provide our students with are meaningful, inspiring, developmental and rigorous.

All students enrolled on our course will complete a DBS application when starting the course. Students are required to be able to work with children and vulnerable adults in order to attend the course. All students pay for is the postal fee.

Students studying an interdisciplinary studies course have a student contract.

We're clear before the start of placement that students are representing our university while in their placement setting. They are asked to conduct themselves in a professional manner. The course team prepares them for what they need to do while in the setting.

We provide full details of the bursaries and financial support available for our students elsewhere on our site.

Are you an employer interested in offering our students professional experience?

We're keen to develop our partnership with a range of educational settings. Our students have a variety of different experiences they want to gain experience in from education, creative, SEN, community, mental health, early years and many more.

“It showed me what parts I enjoy and what is currently outside of my capabilities when it comes to teaching”.

“It was positive and helpful to apply the skills and knowledge I have gained during my studies into practice. It was also beneficial for me to observe other professionals in their role and have the opportunity to ask them questions”.

“It helped to develop teamwork skills, by having to ask questions and work with other nursery practitioners. It helped to develop critical thinking by being observant of child behaviour and deciding what to do next”

“It gave me plenty of hands-on experience in running activities and observing what practical teaching looks like in an early years setting”.

“Placement allowed me to become a more open-minded person and see the real insights into teachers and ways in which they teach”.

“It has helped me gain effective insight into working with SEND children and developed a lot of my skills such as: communication skills as within my placement I had to engage with children in various different ways as children had impairments and difficulties communicating. It also enhanced my teamworking skills as I had to effectively engage with staff and form positive relationships, so I was able to meet all children’s needs”.
