Everything you need to know about the UCAS points calculator

What are UCAS tariff points and how do they work?

Generally, if you have received a qualification after leaving school you will be awarded UCAS tariff points*. The amount of points you get is dependent both on the grades you get, and the type of qualification (A Levels get different points to some BTECs, for example).

Here at Leeds Beckett we use UCAS points as part of our entry requirements, so you can use our handy UCAS tariff calculator to find out what your qualifications are worth.

*UCAS tariff points are applied to Level 3/SCQF Level 6 qualifications, Level 2 qualifications such as your GCSEs will not be awarded points

How do I work out my tariff points using the UCAS points calculator?

The first thing you'll need to do is to find out what types of qualification you have.

When entering your A Level results into the calculator there is no need to also include your AS results for that course as they will already be counted.

There are lots of BTECs listed in the calculator, make sure to check the qualification title (i.e. Diploma or Extended Diploma) with your teacher or advisor if you're not sure which is correct, as these are awarded different points.

Once you've selected your qualification, add your grade as well then press 'Add Qualification.' If you make a mistake, you can remove a qualification from the table.

When you've added all your qualifications, your total UCAS tariff points will be displayed.

How do UCAS points work if I’m an international student?

If you've studied outside the UK, your qualifications may still carry UCAS Tariff points. At Leeds Beckett, we recognise a wide range of international qualifications, including the International Baccalaureate, BTEC, and European and other global systems.

Our UCAS Points Calculator helps you convert your results into a UK equivalent score. Just enter your qualifications to see how your grades translate.

This allows you to check whether you meet the entry requirements for your chosen course and gives you a clear understanding of your next steps.

What is the average number of UCAS points?

At Leeds Beckett, most of our undergraduate courses have entry requirements in the 96 to 160 UCAS points range. That typically reflects qualifications like BTECs, A-Levels (such as BBB–ABB), or equivalent international results.

While each course varies, this range gives you a good idea of the level we usually expect.

You can find specific entry requirements for each course on our website or use the UCAS Points Calculator to see where you stand.

What should I do if I haven't met the entry requirements?

Not quite met the UCAS points needed for your chosen course? You still have options.

  • Explore Clearing: Many courses become available through Clearing, often with slightly lower entry requirements. It's a great chance to find the right fit
  • Consider a foundation year: Some of our degrees include a foundation or International Year Zero route. These are designed to help you build skills and knowledge before progressing onto your chosen course
  • Build your qualifications: If you're close to the points required, consider ways to improve your score. This might include retaking exams or completing an additional qualification like an Extended Project Qualification (EPQ)

No matter your situation, our team is here to help you explore your options and plan your next steps with confidence.
