Requirements for accreditation
This course is designed to satisfy the requirements for accreditation as a Chartered Engineer . As such, it will help you develop your career as a leader in design, construction and management operations within civil engineering.
As part of this course, you’ll:
- Develop your technical ability, understanding of engineering principles, commercial flair and environmental awareness
- Study an advanced course that will equip you with the technical and practical skills to contribute effectively in a wide range of industry settings
- Be taught by staff with professional experience in a broad range of subjects including transportation, geotechnical engineering, structural engineering and water engineering
- Investigate contemporary research and engineering solutions designed to meet global challenges, such as the climate change emergency
- Complete advanced laboratory studies and use industry standard IT design software
Accreditation
This course is accredited by the Joint Board of Moderators (JBM) comprising of the Institution of Civil Engineers (ICE), Institution of Structural Engineers (IStructE), Institute of Highway Engineers (IHE), the Chartered Institution of Highways and Transportation (CIHT) and the Permanent Way Institution (PWI) on behalf of the Engineering Council as meeting the academic requirement for further learning for registration as a Chartered Engineer (CEng). As such, it will help you develop your career as a leader in design, construction and management operations within civil engineering.
To hold accredited qualifications for CEng registration, candidates must also hold a Bachelor (Hons) degree that has been accredited as partially meeting the academic requirement for registration as a Chartered Engineer (CEng).
Specialist facilities
You’ll have access to first-class teaching laboratories, including a full range of civil engineering testing equipment for hydraulics, geotechnics, highway materials, concrete, structures and general materials. Our civil engineering research facility is dedicated to the research work of students and staff and will be available to play a major role in your dissertation project.
Hands-on learning
You’ll be encouraged and guided as you plan your own objectives for career development. We’ll help you set up visits to sites and consultancy offices to aid your development. Engineering experts will share their expertise and experience in a series of guest talks. We’ll also encourage you to research and discuss current civil engineering issues on a regular basis.

Selection Criteria
We may use selection criteria based on your personal attributes; experience and/or commitment to the area of study. This information will be derived from your personal statement and reference and will only be used if you have met the general entry requirements.
Independent study is a crucial part of learning at university and you will be required to undertake many hours of self-directed research and reading, and preparation and writing of assessments. Your course is delivered through a number of modules, which will help you to plan your time and establish a study routine. Outside of your lectures, workshops and tutorials, a range of support is available to assist with your independent study. Our subject-specific librarians will be on hand to direct you to the specialist learning and study-skill resources. You’ll also be assigned an academic advisor to give you tailored feedback and support.
Modules, teaching and learning
What you'll learn
Undertake an in-depth study of a topic relevant to civil engineering and that reflects your specific interests. This project enables you to apply and further enhance your research skills and technical knowledge. This 60-credit module provides the opportunity to investigate a concept relevant to your future career role.
The construction industry is continuingly changing through innovation. Professional engineers are required to demonstrate commitment to lifelong learning by undertaking, and formally recording, Continuing Professional Development (CPD) activities. As preparation, this non-credit module will require you to undertake non-academic CPD activities during your studies at university.
In this module, you'll focus on the properties of fluids and the principles of fluid mechanics, hydraulic modelling and fluid systems analysis. You'll develop an understanding of the issues, problems and solutions within the water infrastructure sector of civil engineering.
You will learn to produce complex engineering solutions to a professional standard. We will provide you with an in-depth understanding of engineering principles in relation to geotechnical analysis and design, looking at how to solve geotechnical engineering problems and produce innovative designs.
We will increase your understanding of the uncertainties and consequences of material behaviour during design, manufacture and in service. You'll study the environmental and safety implications of the materials used for nuclear power production.
Analyse and design a range of structural forms, with emphasis placed on the principles and application of structural dynamics, plate theory, composite steel and concrete structural members, structural conceptual design, structural fire engineering and sustainability in structural engineering. You'll learn the core principles of mathematics, mechanics, and design modelling that underpin the Finite Element Method, a powerful tool for the analysis of complex structures. You'll also use state-of-the-art Finite Element software to perform structural simulations using a computer.
This module considers the analysis, design and maintenance of highways - you will study areas such as route location, geometrics, junction and pavement design, and management. You will also examine the design and operation of airports and railways.

Equipment includes: 360 Cameras, iPads, GoPros, MacBooks, portable data projectors, portable projection screens, flipchart stands, remote presenters, digital cameras and camcorders, SLR cameras, speakers, microphones, headphones, headsets, tripods, digital audio recorders and PC/laptops (a laptop loans service is provided on campus in the library on both campuses). Student laptops are also available from the laptop lockers located in the libraries.
