Your course is delivered through a number of modules, which will help you to plan your time and establish a study routine. Outside of your lectures, workshops and tutorials, a range of support is available to assist with your independent study. What you'll learn
You'll be introduced to practice-based methods of visual communication for fashion, including page layout, image capture and manipulation, and logo design. You'll also gain a thorough grounding in computer skills as you work with Adobe Creative Suite software like Photoshop, Illustrator, and InDesign. This skills-based module is underpinned by research of fashion communication. To broaden your awareness, we'll look at case-studies of printed and digital media of fashion branding and communication.
Interested in how fashion trends begin and what drives them? Fashion Forecasting will explore the different historic and contemporary sources that shape fashion, including technology, society, culture, marketing, retailing, key people, and designers. You'll assess the impact of these factors in relation to their influence on the development of fashion trends. Exploring case studies, you'll identify key fashion styles and trends from a trend forecasting resource like WGSN, or specific fashion design products and fashion marketing strategies. To conclude the module, you'll make your own initial fashion predictions for future style trends.
Explore the concept of customer-orientated marketing. You'll begin to learn about the marketing theory, principles, tools, and strategies used by organisations to tailor their communications to their audiences. We'll cover the key concept of the marketing mix, also known as the 4Ps - product, price, place, and promotion. You'll gain an appreciation of how this can be utilised to develop a customer-orientated marketing strategy. The module focuses on concepts of sustained consumer loyalty and how these are used to gain brand advantage.
Learn more about the history and theory of fashion. On this module, you'll build your understanding of how fashion impacts upon society, culture, and the economy, gaining a foundation for your future studies and practice. We'll look at the key developments in design practice following the emergence of mass production and the expansion of consumerism. You'll discover the significant cultural and economic factors that have informed some of the most influential designers in the period we'll be covering. We'll also introduce you to different research methods and ways you might use them throughout your degree and beyond.
This module introduces the idea of branding in fashion, a concept that's key to building customer loyalty and standing out. You'll grow your knowledge of how iconic fashion brands have impacted on society, culture, and the economy, post-industrialisation. Using an historic framework, this module tracks the roots and heritage of key fashion brands, focusing on their development and importance to the fashion industry. Together, we'll map out the significant developments in fashion branding, looking at industrialisation, mass production, and consumerism.
Marketing Media for Fashion will drive your awareness of how organisations use marketing media and communications to navigate complex and dynamic marketing scenarios. On this module, we'll be focusing on the promotional 'P' of the marketing mix, considering different communication techniques used to promote various products and services. You'll consider marketing in its wider context, drawing on relevant examples and case studies from the fashion industry. This module builds your understanding of the foundational concepts of marketing communications, in preparation for future study. It also equips you with key marketing skills required to succeed in professional marketing environments.
What you'll learn
Following on from Contextual Studies 1, you'll focus on key theorists across modernism and postmodernism within shopping, retail, art, and print media. Having traced the history and positioned fashion and its importance in the 19th and 20th century, we'll establish the cultural reasoning and framework behind fashion theory. Throughout the module, you'll expand your knowledge of research methods and methodologies in preparation for your final year. You'll also increase your awareness of ethics and sustainability in fashion. Upon completion, you'll confidently be able to place the study of style, art, consumerism, retail, and popular culture in the context of design and cultural history.
Develop your understanding of brand ethos and identity, along with customer profiling and market level in relation to the fashion industry. During lectures, we'll use recognised brands from a range of market levels - from high street to luxury and couture - to showcase the dimensions of a fashion brand. We'll also discuss the various marketing strategies that are used by different brands. To demonstrate what you’ve learnt, you'll formulate and develop marketing concepts for an established brand based on a live brief or simulated industry conditions.
Fashion Trend Analysis aims to enhance your understanding of trends and their impact on the fashion industry further, building on your first-year module, Fashion Forecasting. Working to an industry-led brief, you'll research contemporary and historic trends to predict fashion styles and marketing strategies. You'll be introduced to simple, visual strategies for marketing (such as mood boards), and how to produce them to a professional standard. Ultimately, this module provides a grounding in how to produce a cohesive marketing concept for a potential future fashion trend.
Option modules may include
Build on the skills you gained in Visual Communication for Fashion 1 with this module centred around practical development. You'll produce a marketing concept based on an industry-led brief, supported by appropriate contextual research, which includes trend and branding considerations. Your project can be completed using various visual processes, ranging from digital photography to Computer Aided Design (CAD) and film. Each of these communication formats will be navigated through a series of workshops to begin the module, providing you with a grounding in how to present visual work to a professional standard.
Specialise in the concept of fashion styling with this focused route of visual communication. You'll explore digital photographic practice for fashion styling through a series of practical sessions and demonstrations. Throughout the module, you'll produce and realise a global fashion marketing concept, utilising what you've learnt about fashion styling. You'll contextualise your concept with brand and trend research, as well as any relevant social, cultural, or environmental concerns that are applicable to your project. We'll provide plenty of guidance, so you'll be prepared to present your work to a professional standard.
Explore the world of fashion writing on this module which centres around editorial journalism for fashion. You'll discover a range of editorial media for fashion and learn how to write appropriate copy for a range of audiences and platforms. We'll dive into the cultural, historic, and technological contexts in which fashion writing exists, expanding your awareness of these factors and how they might inform your work. To conclude, you'll develop a concept for fashion marketing, incorporating editorial fashion writing across a range of media.
New media encompasses forms of communication that use digital technologies to produce content and reach audiences. On this module, you'll hone your fashion writing skills to craft and publish digital content across the ever-expanding area of new media. Examples of platforms that you might work with include websites, blogs, social media platforms, interactive media, online magazines, and more. You'll be tasked with developing a concept for fashion marketing incorporating fashion writing and new media across a range of platforms.
This module introduces you to public relations (PR), which we'll explore from the perspective of brand communication in a fashion context. We'll also consider the wider role PR plays in society and culture. Focusing on concepts related to persuasive communication and consumer behaviour, you'll analyse how PR and brand communication builds on the theories and practices you've learnt about so far. Ultimately, this module will deepen your understanding of contemporary communication practice in fashion and the effectiveness of different strategies.
Delve into how brands are created and developed. On this module, you'll gain an insight into entrepreneurial marketing activities including relationship marketing, expeditionary marketing, and one-to-one marketing. You'll study their use in developing fashion brand marketing for new and innovative business concepts. Although the module will heavily focus on fashion brands, you'll also consider businesses from a range of sectors, including profit and non-profit. By the end of the module, you'll be able to apply effective marketing tools to the creation and development of new fashion brand opportunities. You'll also understand potential opportunities and challenges facing marketers in entrepreneurial fashion business settings.
Retail Marketing looks at the theories, techniques and strategies involved in marketing for fashion retail environments. You'll cover both traditional approaches to visual merchandising (such as point-of-sale, store design and layout, and window display), as well as modern digital methods of e-commerce. Studying the historic and contemporary approaches to retail marketing, you'll focus on how both can be used to develop innovative and competitive retail marketing concepts for a range of contexts.
What you'll learn
Write an illustrated 6000-8000-word document explaining the theories supporting your research and self-initiated project work in marketing, visual communication, and fashion writing. This is an extensive piece of independent work, where you'll take a research project from conception to completion. You'll identify an area of interest and propose your idea, detailing how you intend to organise and manage your project. You'll then conduct research, analyse the findings, and present your work. Ultimately, your Dissertation will develop your critical thinking and analytical skills, as well as boost your expertise in your chosen area.
You'll have the opportunity to study your chosen occupation in-depth and carry out research to boost your employability prospects post-graduation. There are many varied career paths available to you in different areas after studying this fashion marketing course, including in fashion marketing, communications, and a range of writing-based media. If you've chosen solely marketing-focused option modules, your career aspirations might be geared towards a more business-orientated profession.

Fashion Brand Marketing will explore marketing and communication from the perspective of branding and brand management. You'll gain an understanding of contemporary marketing trends from a theoretical and practical angle, primarily considering fashion brands, but also looking further afield. We'll cover strategies and models from a range of fashion brands, with a focus on linear and circular fashion models. You'll learn to identify the characteristics, importance and value of successful fashion brands to organisations, consumers, and society. You'll also understand the importance of brand management and how to apply appropriate marketing approaches to support fashion brand promotional activities.
Conduct research into a visual communication project of your choice. You can base your project on a sector that you aspire to build a career in, enabling you to gain expertise in this area. You'll underpin your research project with thorough market, trend, and brand analysis, adding context with subsequent cultural, social, or environmental factors. Drawing on research methodologies and skills you've learnt throughout the course, your research will be the basis of your marketing concept for a fashion-related service or product. This module helps you to generate a portfolio of work ready to inform your Visual Communication for Fashion Final Major Project module.
Gain valuable experience in industry with this placement-focused module. You'll gain insight into working in area related to your course and career aspirations by undertaking a period of work experience. The exposure will build your transferable, personal, and subject-related professional skills and competencies. To conclude, you'll write a reflective account of your placement. You'll explore how knowledge and skills you gained from the course so far have helped you, detail the skills you developed during your placement, and evaluate areas for improvement to boost your future employment prospects post-graduation.
Following on from your fashion marketing concept proposal and research conducted in the Visual Communication for Fashion 3 module, you'll produce an industry-led project. Your project will be completed and presented to a professional standard, covering a range of relevant visual research methods. You'll demonstrate a thorough consideration of the research conducted previously and show how you've altered the use of visual media from the preparatory stages to final project. Upon completion, you'll have developed strong visual communication skills as you translate your knowledge into visual content. You'll also have gained skills in project management, research, and how to conduct and complete work in a professional manner.
You'll undertake a self-directed fashion writing project of your choice. Depending on your career aspirations, you can tailor this project to the style of fashion writing you wish to pursue. You'll employ your research knowledge and skills to reinforce your work with thorough market research, trend, and brand analysis. This will be contextualised with any relevant cultural, social, or environmental concerns. Your project concept for a fashion related service or product will be industry-led and appropriate for its intended audience. The skills you've developed throughout your degree will enable you to finish your final fashion writing copy to a professional standard.
Consider marketing and communication in the arts and cultural industries. You'll be introduced to this specialist area of marketing, exploring the theoretical and practical marketing developments in these creative industries, including fashion. We'll cover marketing and communication for both traditional arts, which might include music, theatre, performing arts, galleries, and museums, alongside new areas involving digital art forms, such as gaming. Upon completion, you'll have a better understanding of how marketing theory and practice can be used across the public, private, and not-for-profit sectors of the arts and entertainment industries.
Dive into the increasingly significant area of digital marketing. On this module, you'll enhance your understanding of digital marketing from your second year. We'll explore different digital technologies, platforms, and media, as well as other topics like digital disruption, objective setting, how to conduct audits, and how to monitor and control activities. Considering various corporate environments (in particular, the fashion industry), you'll address a variety of set problems and scenarios by formulating strategic digital marketing solutions. Ultimately, this module provides you with the professional digital marketing skills required to work in a range of marketing careers.
This course offers the opportunity to take a ‘placement’ year – a year of paid employment in industry which will build your skills and experience. This is usually taken between the second and third year of your degree and will extend the length of your course by an additional year.
Students who choose the placement route find it helps with both their studies and getting a job after graduation. It can build your confidence, contacts, and of course your CV. Leeds Beckett advertise lots of placement opportunities and provide support in helping you find the right placement for you.

In many cases, costs associated with your course will be included in your course fee. However, in some cases there are ‘essential’ additional costs (those that you will be required to meet in addition to your course fee), and/or ‘optional’ additional costs (costs that are not required, but that you might choose to pay). - USB or Mac-compatible external hard drive. Cost will vary; alternatively, you could save your work using Office 365 and submit it digitally.
- Digital printing; some printing of assignments is compulsory, other printing is optional and dependant on your individual project work (£50).

Other study-related expenses to consider: materials that you will need to complete your course such as books (whilst the library provides access to readings recommended for your modules, you may wish to purchase your own copies of some books); you can also make suggestions for books to be added to Library stock; placement costs (these may include travel expenses and living costs); student visas (international students only); printing, photocopying and stationery (you may need to pay for multiple copies of your dissertation or final project to be printed and bound); events associated with your course such as field trips; study abroad opportunities (travel costs and accommodation, visas and immunisations). Other costs could include academic conferences (travel costs) and professional-body membership (where applicable). The costs you will need to cover for graduation will include gown hire and guest tickets, and optional extras such as professional photography.
As well as your mobile phone, you will also need access to a desktop computer and/or laptop to complete assignments and access university online services such as MyBeckett, your virtual learning environment. You can book and borrow AV equipment through the media equipment service accessed online via the student hub and located in the library at each campus. Equipment includes: 360 Cameras, iPads, GoPros, MacBooks, portable data projectors, portable projection screens, flipchart stands, remote presenters, digital cameras and camcorders, SLR cameras, speakers, microphones, headphones, headsets, tripods, digital audio recorders and PC/laptops (a laptop loans service is provided on campus in the library on both campuses). Student laptops are also available from the laptop lockers located in the libraries.

In many cases, costs associated with your course will be included in your course fee. However, in some cases there are ‘essential’ additional costs (those that you will be required to meet in addition to your course fee), and/or ‘optional’ additional costs (costs that are not required, but that you might choose to pay). We have included those essential or optional additional costs that relate to your course, below.
Access to course resources, equipment and facilities, including:
- Creative spaces, including fashion studios with the latest machinery and cutting tables, and access to PC and Mac desktops with CAD software
- Free entry to Inside/Out lecture series
Essential Costs
- USB or Mac-compatible external hard drive. Cost will vary; alternatively, you could save your work using Office 365 and submit it digitally.
- Digital printing; some printing of assignments is compulsory, other printing is optional and dependant on your individual project work (£50).
Optional Costs
- UK and/or overseas trips. Costs will vary depending on location.
- A3 portfolio (£10-25).
- Project materials (£50). Cost will vary depending on your practice and materials used.
Other study-related expenses to consider: materials that you will need to complete your course such as books (whilst the library provides access to readings recommended for your modules, you may wish to purchase your own copies of some books); you can also make suggestions for books to be added to Library stock; placement costs (these may include travel expenses and living costs); student visas (international students only); printing, photocopying and stationery (you may need to pay for multiple copies of your dissertation or final project to be printed and bound); events associated with your course such as field trips; study abroad opportunities (travel costs and accommodation, visas and immunisations). Other costs could include academic conferences (travel costs) and professional-body membership (where applicable). The costs you will need to cover for graduation will include gown hire and guest tickets, and optional extras such as professional photography.
As well as your mobile phone, you will also need access to a desktop computer and/or laptop to complete assignments and access university online services such as MyBeckett, your virtual learning environment. You can book and borrow AV equipment through the media equipment service accessed online via the student hub and located in the library at each campus. Equipment includes: 360 Cameras, iPads, GoPros, MacBooks, portable data projectors, portable projection screens, flipchart stands, remote presenters, digital cameras and camcorders, SLR cameras, speakers, microphones, headphones, headsets, tripods, digital audio recorders and PC/laptops (a laptop loans service is provided on campus in the library on both campuses). Student laptops are also available from the laptop lockers located in the libraries.
This list is not exhaustive, costs are approximate and will vary depending on the choices you make during your course. Any rental, travel or living costs are also in addition to your course fees. If you choose to study via distance learning, you may not be able to access all of the facilities listed if you are not able to visit us on campus.

Designing and making clothes is only part of the fashion industry.
