This master’s course is driven by the increasingly global nature of the financial services industry and the continued expansion of international trade. We’ll help you gain the expertise to undertake a senior role for a company with an international reach.
As part of this course, you’ll:
- Develop intellectual and technical skills and learn to apply these to a range of complex problems in the field of international trade and finance
- Study the key notions relating to international trade and finance, with the opportunity to specialise in your area of interest via your dissertation or consultancy project
- Combine technical and subject-specific knowledge with skills related to working as a professional in internationally engaged companies
- Extend your knowledge of international trade agreements
- Apply your expertise to topical issues such as Brexit, trade wars, globalisation, inequality, and ethical issues associated with economic development
Your experience
You could already work in managing overseas commercial activities or be looking to become an expert in international trade agreements. Whatever your career aspirations, this course will enable you to develop the skills you’ll need for a senior role at a company that trades internationally.
International links
From the mix of students, to the course content and our strong international links, you’ll take an international perspective throughout your course. You’ll learn in a multi-cultural learning environment to prepare you for the international employment market. This course is delivered internationally in the UK, China and Vietnam and we have research links with a major Chinese university.
International collaborative delivery
We have a collaborative arrangement for delivery at a university in Hangzhou, China. If you’re studying in China, you’ll have the option to study one semester at Leeds Beckett as part of your course.

IELTS 6.0 with no skills below 5.5, or an equivalent qualification. The University provides excellent support for any applicant who may be required to undertake additional English language courses.
Selection Criteria
We may use selection criteria based on your personal attributes; experience and/or commitment to the area of study. This information will be derived from your personal statement and reference and will only be used if you have met the general entry requirements.
Independent study is a crucial part of learning at university and you will be required to undertake many hours of self-directed research and reading, and preparation and writing of assessments. Your course is delivered through a number of modules, which will help you to plan your time and establish a study routine. Outside of your lectures, workshops and tutorials, a range of support is available to assist with your independent study. Our subject-specific librarians will be on hand to direct you to the specialist learning and study-skill resources. You’ll also be assigned an academic advisor to give you tailored feedback and support.

What you'll learn
Gain a sound understanding and appreciation of the international economy in terms of trade and its impact on the macroeconomic stability in which businesses operate.
Gain a comprehensive understanding of the economics of the operation and organisation of national and international financial systems.
Examine the legal system of the World Trade Organization which governs the relations of states and other international players in the legal framework within which nations trade.
Examine the interrelationship between the theoretical rationale for trade and its policy and practice in relation to the issues of development and growth within the developing world.
You will evaluate the theory and practice of modern international corporate finance, focusing on modern developments in international markets and funding products, and their relationship to the needs of international business.
If you choose the Dissertation module, you'll carry out an in-depth research project in a subject area that is of particular interest to you. If you choose the Work Based Organisational Consultancy Project module, you'll complete a project that explores a key issue for a client organisation - a small business, public sector organisation, social enterprise etc. You'll focus on a key issue that the client organisation requires intelligence and information to help them tackle and address. In working with the client organisation, you'll develop and negotiate a suitable project involving the collection and analysis of a range of data and information.
What you'll learn
Develop your understanding of the banking sector by studying some key concepts, principles and practices in modern banking regulations and the resolution of modern banking crises. You'll study topics such as banking supervision and regulations, prudential supervision of banks, and international regulations.
Develop critical thinking and decision making for operational and logistical aspects of an enterprise. You'll also gain an appreciation of strategies for planning and co-ordination in a supply chain.
Sustainable finance integrates environmental, social and governance (ESG) criteria into financial decision making by businesses and financial institutions. This module will provide you with knowledge and understanding of the latest developments of theory and practice in the area. You'll study the critical role sustainable finance can play in the move of the global economy towards a sustainable future.

Your tuition fees cover the cost of registration, tuition, academic supervision, assessments and examinations.
The following are also included in the cost of your course:
- 24/7 Library and student IT support
- Free wifi via eduroam
- Skills workshops and resources
- Library membership, giving access to more than 500,000 printed, multimedia and digital resources
- Access to software, including five free copies of Microsoft Office 365 to install on your PC,laptop and MAC, and access to free high-end software via the Leeds Beckett remote app
- Loan of high-end media equipment to support your studies

- Simulation suite, an on-campus system that will help you to develop effective leadership and group participant skills.
- Trading floor that features professional-level equipment including Datastream, a news and information system provided by mass media and information firm Thomson Reuters.
Other study-related expenses to consider: materials that you will need to complete your course such as books (whilst the library provides access to readings recommended for your modules, you may wish to purchase your own copies of some books); you can also make suggestions for books to be added to Library stock; placement costs (these may include travel expenses and living costs); student visas (international students only); printing, photocopying and stationery (you may need to pay for multiple copies of your dissertation or final project to be printed and bound); events associated with your course such as field trips; study abroad opportunities (travel costs and accommodation, visas and immunisations). Other costs could include academic conferences (travel costs) and professional-body membership (where applicable). The costs you will need to cover for graduation will include gown hire and guest tickets, and optional extras such as professional photography.
As well as your mobile phone, you will also need access to a desktop computer and/or laptop to complete assignments and access university online services such as MyBeckett, your virtual learning environment. You can book and borrow AV equipment through the media equipment service accessed online via the student hub and located in the library at each campus. Equipment includes: 360 Cameras, iPads, GoPros, MacBooks, portable data projectors, portable projection screens, flipchart stands, remote presenters, digital cameras and camcorders, SLR cameras, speakers, microphones, headphones, headsets, tripods, digital audio recorders and PC/laptops (a laptop loans service is provided on campus in the library on both campuses). Student laptops are also available from the laptop lockers located in the libraries.

If you choose to study via distance learning, you may not be able to access all of the facilities listed if you are not able to visit us on campus.

George has extensive practical and academic experience in the field of strategic management, R and D (research and development) and the adoption of new technologies and innovation. He has done extensive research and enterprise work in the area of buyer behaviour, with particular interest in online purchasing and the use of technology to enable the sustainable growth of businesses. He has also supervised and examined many PhDs both in the UK and Europe and is an external examiner for two UK universities.
