Anne Fehrenbach, Stanton Williams: ‘Museum of London: A Case Study in Adaptive Reuse’
How to transform a historic market, once a place for trading goods, into a place for trading ideas and storytelling. Working in collaboration with Asif Khan Studio and Conservation Architect Julian Harrap, Stanton Williams are transforming parts of the historic West Smithfield Market into a new home for the Museum of London. Bringing new vibrancy to a historic, yet deteriorating, part of the city, the project reimagines a campus of heritage market buildings into a 24- hour world class cultural destination and a democratic arena for public life and debate. One of the largest cultural schemes happening in Europe, the new Museum of London at West Smithfield is a showcase of adaptive reuse of heritage buildings. In this talk, Stanton Williams’ Anne Fehrenbach, who has been working in a leadership role on the project since the firm won the competition in 2016, will discuss the design strategies adopted to attain exemplar sustainable targets and circular economy principles.
