During the lecture Professor Ah-Lian Kor will present her two strands of research.
The first strand is Artificial Intelligence (Qualitative Spatial Reasoning) research which involves building novel 2-D and 3-D models, as well as creating formal representations and reasoning mechanisms for cardinal direction relations. In order to render the models more expressive, Professor Kor has included relevant theories such as Region Connection Calculus (RCC-5 and RCC-8), Mereology (‘Whole’ and ‘Part’), and Syllogisms.
The second research strand is sustainable research which includes green and energy efficient data centres, green software, energy efficient cloud and organisational flexible working-related carbon footprint.
Finally, Kor will present how Artificial Intelligence and sustainability could be integrated into her future “Smart and Sustainable IT Research.”
Professor Ah-Lian Kor is a Professor in Sustainable and Intelligent Computing and has led the university Sustainable IT research group since 2018. Professor Kor has been active in applied research relating to Artificial Intelligence, IT infrastructure and data centre energy efficiency and sustainability. The four underpinning research areas span from AI-driven data centre, data centre thermal characteristics analysis, ICT infrastructure energy efficiency, and data centre energy efficiency metrics.
Projects Ah-Lian is involved in, include:
- EU-GENIAL (Green Networking and Cloud Computing)
- EU-CEBMI (Centre of Biomedicine and Informatics)
- EU-PERCCOM (Pervasive Computing and Computing for Sustainable Development)
- EU-GREENCO (Green Computing and Communications)
- EU-ALIOT (Internet of Things: Emerging Curriculum for Industry and Human Applications)
- EU- GLOBE (Green Skills for Apprenticeship); UK-Freshness Indicators and Smart Packaging; UK-Smart Legislation Compliance Tool
Ah-Lian also sits on Journal Editorial Boards and International Conference Programme Committees such as IDT. She is Publication Chair for IEEE DESSERT 2018 and 2020, General Co-Chair for IEEE LCN ON-MOVE 2018, Organisation Chair for IEEE DESSERT 2019.
Professor Kor is Guest Editor for special journal issues: Applied Sciences ‘AI for Sustainability and Innovation’; Sensors ‘Intelligent Digital Twin-Based IoT Applications: From Industry to Natural Environment’ and ‘Internet of Things (IoT) for Sustainable Development’; Sustainability ‘Emerging Technologies for Sustainability and Safety’.
She is also a Member of HLPF Major Groups and other Stakeholders Coordination Mechanism group to support UN Action for Sustainability (2021-now); Technical Board Member for IEEE Hyperintelligence Research Group (2021-now); IEEE Technical Committee on Semantic Computing (TCSEM), IEEE Technical Committee on Pattern Analysis and Machine Intelligence (TCPAMI), and IEEE Technical Committee on Intelligent Informatics (TCII).
This lecture is part of Leeds Beckett University's Inaugural Professorial lecture series.
