Using unbalanced panel data for 85 countries between 2010 and 2019, we find that the gender wage gap in tourism is smaller when gender equality is embedded in a country’s legal system. Specifically, the empirical evidence suggests that laws supporting women’s decision to work, equal pay and women’s employment after having children are imperative for closing gender wage gaps in tourism.

Dr Mahalia Jackman is currently a Senior Lecturer in Economics at the University of the West Indies, Cave Hill Campus, Barbados. Mahalia has a wealth of experience as a research and policy economist, having worked in the Research and Economic Analysis Department at the Central Bank of Barbados during the early years of her career. Mahalia has many research interests. Her early work revolved around tourism as well as economic issues in small island developing states– a reflection of her tenure at the Central Bank of Barbados. While the aforementioned area remain primary areas of interest, a plurality of her current research focuses on issues relating to sexual prejudice and gender equality.
