West Africa and the Sahel: Understanding the Changing Landscape
Join us for Dr Olayinka Ajala's Africa Research Initiative Workshop on the current challenges in West Africa and the Sahel.

The Africa Research Initiative is a new and exciting endeavour in the Centre for Applied Social Research in the School of Humanities and Social Sciences, headed up by Dr Ajala. This workshop explores the current challenges in West Africa and the Sahel, with lectures from two expert invited speakers:

  • Democratic backsliding – is a wind of authoritarianism brewing in Africa?
    Professor Morten Boas (Research professor at the Norwegian Institute of International Affairs (NUPI), specialising in Africa and the Sahel)
  • The impacts of Insecurity, economic stagnation and external interference on governance in the Sahel
    Issaka Ouedraogo (Director of Sahel Political a Risk and Strategy consultancy based in Switzerland)

The event will also include a documentary screening on migration and forced displacement in Nigeria, presentations from early career researchers and a roundtable discussion at the end.

Dr Olayinka Ajala

Senior Lecturer / School Of Humanities And Social Sciences

Dr Olayinka Ajala is an internationally recognised researcher working on exploring the dynamics of violent conflicts and climate change in West Africa and the Sahel. His areas of interests include insurgencies, terrorism, resource conflicts and internal displacement in the region.
