Heart of culture and the arts
Leeds is the Northern heart of culture and the arts. Your campus sits in the very centre of the city, surrounded by numerous museums, art galleries, theatres, film production companies and recording studios.

We work directly with Leeds museums and galleries and many regional events, including the Ilkley Literature Festival and the Leeds West Indian Carnival.

Diverse research community

Our research and teaching explore a diversity of topics, from South Africa under Apartheid to the cultural impact of the LGBTQ community, and on-line racism in football to 21st-century genres.

Hands-on learning

We're also very hands-on. You’ll have access to regular conferences, seminars and events organised by our Centre for Culture and the Arts, and collaborations with institutes and cultural organisations.

History was always my favourite subject at school and my course focused on social and cultural history which is my passion. By studying major events in world history, from the French Revolution to the Cold War, I'm now able to bring my interpretations of exhibitions and artworks to life and keep my visitors thoroughly engaged.

How to apply

History student, Sophia Lambert, shares how the history of Leeds inspires her study From exhibitions and events to museums which showcase different periods of history, current student Sophia tells us why she chose to study History in Leeds, and how the city inspires and supports her study at Leeds Beckett.

I'm Sophia Lambert and I studied history. I chose Leeds Beckett because when I came on the open day I had the opportunity to speak to the lecturers and really liked the passion and enthusiasm that they had for the subject. So when I came on the open day I got to speak to students who are already here and they just made it sound like a really great place to come and study. I really like the environment and the lecturers were really friendly and approachable. Leeds is a great place to study history. There's so much going on—lots of exhibitions and events, lots of different types of museums. For example, if you're interested in military history, there's the Royal Armouries Museum. If you're interested in social history, you can always visit Abbey House Museum as well. You get to study lots of different types of history that you don't necessarily get to study at school. For example, digital history: learn how to build websites, how to make a podcast, and how to use WordPress. These are all things that employers are really looking for—transferable digital skills. My lecturer told me recently about an opportunity to go and work at a museum as a heritage volunteer, and this is something that I took up and I really enjoy it. I also really like the social learning space because that's the hub of the School of Humanities and Cultural Studies. It's a great space to meet your friends and sit and talk and help each other with work as well. In the future, after I finish my degree, I'd love to do a master's in modern history and then eventually a PhD, and that's how my lecturers have inspired me. They care so much about their subject and they're passionate. It makes me want to do well, and I'd love to be able to lecture in modern history.
