Innovative fashion designer Jane Bowler to give public lecture at Leeds Beckett
The free event will be held from 1-2pm on Thursday 5 March in Lecture Theatre A of the University’s City Campus Rose Bowl building. No booking is required and all are welcome.
Jane launched her fashion career after graduating from the Royal College of Art in 2008. She has since been nominated for the prestigious ‘Material Innovation Award’ supported by the Clothworkers Foundation, and was also an ‘Emerging Designer’ finalist at the WGSN Global Fashion Awards in 2013. Her designs have been photographed by Rankin and Nick Knight, and featured in high-end magazines such as Vogue, GQ, I-D and Dazed and Confused.
Jane said: "I am really looking forward to talking to Leeds Beckett students about my journey as a fashion designer, setting up my own business, fashion and textiles innovation and the real world of fashion!"
Peter Dixon, Senior Lecturer in the University's School of AAD, who has organised the series, commented: “It is a real coup for Leeds Beckett to have Jane Bowler as one of our speakers. Her lecture is particularly timely given that we have our very first cohort of BA (Hons) Fashion undergraduates this academic year, who I know will be very much looking forward to the event and to hearing about Jane’s career and rise to success.”
The event forms part of the Inside Out guest lecture programme, hosted by the University’s School of Art, Architecture & Design (AAD). Other high profile speakers in the series include Michael England, an award winning multi-disciplinary artist whose skills are sought from clients such as Sony Music, the BBC and Channel 4, on Thursday 19 March and Graeme Brooker, an author and founder of Interior Educators on Thursday 26 March.
Katie Lenton, Course Leader of the BA (Hons) Fashion degree, will be hosting the lecture. She added: “We are excited to be welcoming Jane as part of the Inside Out lecture series and I am sure she will be a great source of inspiration to our students. Her inquisitive approach to material play and experimentation is extraordinary and has resulted in some innovative approaches to engineered pattern cutting and garment construction.”
Jane’s label encompasses: fashion and textile innovation, commission-based work, creative consultation, costume design and lecturing. She has gained a high profile celebrity following including: Azealia Banks, Rita Ora, Lady Gaga, Nikki Minaj, Ellie Goulding and Nicole Scherzinger.
The Jane Bowler brand works with educational institutions and the V&A Museum, whilst also expanding on an international level, through the British Fashion Council’s recognition of her talent. Jane’s workshops have reached as far as the Philippines and Slovenia, while her collections are stocked internationally alongside an exclusive range of accessories, which are available to purchase via the Jane Bowler online store.
