Beth's paper is entitled Making the work '13' with my sons: A practice-led choreographic research process into dance as a contemporary 'rite of passage' and explores research on ‘undisciplined bodies’.
The paper aims to articulate a particular choreographic practice that explores work with children’s bodies, asking whether the apparent authenticity of children’s bodies dancing legitimates a simultaneous reframing of the objectifying gaze whilst empowering children as self-aware subjects with creative potential.
The research explores embodied identities and social relations through choreographic practice and dance praxis creatively intervening with the ‘making’ of masculinity in the everyday and domestic. It aims to articulate a choreographic methodology as a means of performers determining ownership of authentic and non-limited representations of their bodies.
