Campus Pride launch
Led by the Students' Union and continuing throughout February, it will celebrate our commitment to LGBT equality and our pride in our staff and students.
Students and staff are welcome to come along to one of the Safe Spaces at the Student Union offices on Tuesday 7 February, 09:00-15:30 at Headingley Campus and at Portland, City Campus, and get a free cup of tea and a biscuit and relax. A Safe Space is a place where anyone can relax and be able to fully express, without fear of being made to feel uncomfortable, unwelcome, or unsafe on account of biological sex, race or ethnicity, sexual orientation, gender identity or expression, cultural background, religious affiliation, age, or physical or mental ability.
Yorkshire MESMAC join us at Campus Pride offering free and confidential instant results HIV testing on campus. They are running a drop-in session in a private testing room at City Campus Students’ Union between 10:00-16:00. Gay, bisexual, men who have sex with men, Trans* and non-binary people welcome.
There will be a Community Marketplace at The Mall, Gateway, Leslie Silver, City Campus from 10:30-15:30 where staff and students can meet representatives from a variety of local and regional LGBT organisations to include: Yorkshire MESMAC; Leeds Beckett SU Student Advice - Hate Crime Reporting Centre and members of the Rainbow Rose Forum.
On the ground floor of Broadcasting Place from 11:00-13:00 there will be an arts-based microvolunteering activity. You will be provided with canvas and paints and you bring along your 'message' of what inclusivity means to you. Student and staff will be contributing to a piece of artwork which will be hung up on campus, no experience needed.
Leeds LGBT Mapping project is mapping all LGBT+ activity in and around the city - from book clubs to running clubs, from drag nights on Briggate to queer migrant solidarity activism, from mental health peer to peer support groups to staff networks. Staff and students are encouraged to complete a Leeds LGBT Mapping project online survey. Visitors to the stall will be rewarded with tea, coffee and cake, as well as a chance to win a £50 shopping voucher. Information from the survey will provide an evidence base for future action supporting LGBT+ people in the city. This mapping project will also provide the building blocks for an online LGBT+ community resource. The survey can be found here.
Students can join the RAG Society from 11:00-14:00 at The Mall, Leslie Silver, City Campus; members will be on campus fundraising for Action for Trans Health, and help raise vital funds for many good causes.
