Interior Educators' founder to speak at Leeds Beckett
The free public event will take place from 1-2pm on Thursday 26 March in Lecture Theatre A of the University’s City Campus Rose Bowl building. No booking is required.
An academic, writer and designer, Graeme is the head of the department of Fashion and Interiors at Middlesex University, London. He has held numerous senior positions in institutions in the UK, most notably at the Universities of Cardiff, Manchester and Brighton, where he taught both studio and theory in interior architecture and design.
Speaking ahead of the event, Graeme commented: “I'm very much look forward to visiting the school and I plan to talk about Interiors in its broadest sense using some of my work with which to illustrate ideas about inside space.”
As well as being the founder and Director of Interior Educators, the national subject association for interiors in the UK, Graeme has written numerous books on the design of interior space and in particular on the implications of reusing existing buildings.
He is also a commissioning editor for the publisher Ashgate and a member of the editorial advisory board for the journals, ‘Interiors: Design: Architecture: Culture’; ‘Architecture: Media: Politics: Society: (AMPS)’ and the Australian and New Zealand-based Journal ‘I.D.E.A’.
Graeme’s session is the last in this year’s Inside Out guest lecture programme, hosted by the University’s School of Art, Architecture & Design (AAD). Other high profile speakers in the series have included fashion designer Jane Bowler and Michael England, an award winning multi-disciplinary artist whose skills are sought from clients such as the Sony Music, the BBC and Channel 4.
Peter Dixon, Senior Lecturer in the University's School of AAD, who has organised the series, said: “This year’s lecture programme has been fantastic. Through a range of varied, high profile speakers, the 2015 sessions have offered historical, theoretical and critical analyses of the arts, architecture and design, creating a platform for internationally recognised practitioners to engage with our School.
“Graeme Brooker is an influential figure in the design world particularly within 'interiors'. I have worked alongside Graeme for many years now under his leadership within Interior Educators, we are very much looking forward to welcoming him to Leeds Beckett to share his in depth knowledge of the subject of 'Interior Architecture and the re-modelling of existing buildings'.”
