Intrepid student launches new travel blog
Matthew Smith, a final year student on the BA (Hons) Media, Communication, Cultures course at Leeds Beckett, is helping friend and fellow traveller, Ryan Thorpe, to realise his dream of creating a central hub for students everywhere who want to share experiences, and search for tips and advice, around travelling.
Matthew explained: “Ryan and I met working at an American Summer Camp a few years back and shared a passion for travel. My degree has really helped get us started. I have taken modules in journalism, which allowed me to write and edit articles; with one particular module helping a lot in the way of online blog writing. I love to edit video, write creatively and work with images and sound and Ryan is a very keen business entrepreneur so we mix well.
“We are currently working on a new look for the website, changing format to a more 'Humans of New York' style layout (a photography blog featuring interviews collected on the streets of New York), focusing more on individuals and what travelling gave them in terms of life experience.”
The Student Nomad website aims to build a comprehensive guide to experiences which can be searched by country as well as by travel type: such as studying abroad, summer camps, and international volunteering. Alongside the blog, the team has accounts across Facebook, Twitter and Instagram, already amassing a following of more than 7,000 on Instagram.
Matthew added: “Through the Student Nomad, we want to build a travelling student community that promotes the importance of leaving your comfort zone, whilst learning about new cultures through different experiences. The time between being a teenager and an adult is one of the most important transitioning periods in your life. This is when you have the time to self-discover and learn about yourself and the world.”
