Leeds Beckett fashion students launch pop-up shop
A selection of work by the Leeds Beckett students is currently being sold at Lambert’s Yard, an innovative retail space in central Leeds. The white shirts were created in semester one and provided the students with an intensive introduction to pattern cutting and garment construction. The jersey and denim pieces were created in semester two and the design brief required students to respond to the concept of Metamorphosis, ‘A change of the form or nature of a thing or person into a completely different one’.
After gathering an evocative range of visual research, each student established a unique interpretation of the brief which directed the design development and sampling process. Students were introduced to a range of transformative pattern cutting techniques that enabled them to exploit the inherent properties of jersey and denim fabrics, creating adaptive garments that can be worn in multiple ways.
The pop-up shop of student work runs until June 19 at Lambert’s Yard, when there will also be a screening of a short film created by staff and students from BA (Hons) Fashion, BA (Hons) Filmmaking and students from BSc (Hons) Music Technology, as a creative, modern alternative to hosting a runway show.
Speaking about the project, Adam Jagger, Retail Director at Lambert’s Yard, who handpicked the work, said: “I’m really impressed with the quality that has come from the students. Some of the pieces wouldn’t even look out of place on a runway at London Fashion Week.”
Katie Lenton, Course Leader BA (Hons) Fashion at Leeds Beckett University, added: “We are excited to be working with Lambert's Yard and believe that the concept behind the store, of representing independent brands and designers in a re-imagined space, reflects our own course ethos which encourages individuality, experimentation and innovation. It is a great opportunity for our students to have their garments professionally presented within a retail environment and we look forward to working with Lambert's Yard in the future."
