The magnificent 12 from Leeds Beckett on way to Oz RL Student World Cup
In July, players will represent all four home nations with five selected for Wales, four for England, two for Scotland and one for Ireland. They will be joined in Sydney by teams from Australia and New Zealand. Overall, Leeds Beckett has more students in attendance at the event than any other UK university, demonstrating the strength and quality of the rugby league programme at our University.
Leeds Beckett Rugby League Club Captain Jake Reed, who has been selected for England, explained: “It's a massive honour for all of the boys involved in this process; to represent your country in a student World Cup especially in Sydney, it doesn't get much better, and I know each of them including myself can't wait to get out there. To have 12 players from our squad selected in total for their countries reflects massively on the success and culture at Leeds Beckett Rugby League and I'm certain each one of them will go on and represent our University proudly.”
Rugby League Head Coach, Paul Fletcher was delighted with the team selections. He commented: “I would like to congratulate all 12 players from Leeds Beckett that have been selected to represent the home nation sides in the University World Cup. To be part of the tournament is the highest accolade for a player. They may not know it now but the experience will be life changing and they’ll have memories which will live with them forever. To have so many representatives is a remarkable achievement, and underpins their dedication and ability and is a glowing tribute to the Leeds Beckett rugby league programme.”
All players are expected to contribute financially to the event and many are still looking for donations and sponsorship to help with this.
