Phishing warning
If colleagues get an email that looks like this you should delete it immediately. If you or your students have clicked on the link and provided details, you need to contact your respective IT Support teams (IT Service Desk for staff colleagues and Library IT Support for students) so that you can get your password reset and we can try and eliminate any further spread.
This live phishing attempt has already seen several of our university student email accounts compromised over the last week and a small number of staff accounts have been compromised. Thousands of emails have been generated in the process and IT Services’ colleagues are working hard to monitor, track, and block the phishing attempts and reset email accounts for affected students and staff.
As well as IT Services’ colleagues working hard to block attempts we would like to remind staff colleagues of what to do if you receive an email that you are uncertain of. Staff should follow the basic guidelines below:
• If the email is from an unfamiliar sender, be extra vigilant with links or attachments. If necessary contact the sender to confirm the email is valid.
• If you recognise the sender, but the content is different to the sender’s usual style, then exercise caution and contact the sender to ensure the email is genuine.
• If you don’t recognise a web link, do not click on it.
• If you are uncertain on the validity of a web link or have clicked on one, please inform the IT Service Desk as soon as possible.
• If you're unsure, ring the person who sent you the email to verify its nature. Remember 'is this something you were expecting?'.
• Do not click on untrusted links and do not enter your username and password.
• If an emails says "Caution: External Email" you should be extra cautious and read through the content carefully before clicking on any links.
