Inspiring 2018 graduates: Claire Paylor
Having received a 2:1, the Environmental Health student quickly secured a position at Selby District Council and has now earned a promotion to become an Environmental Health Officer.
“I’ve loved every minute of my time at the university.” She said. “It’s been stressful at times, but honestly, it has flown by. I can’t quite believe I’m here at the end of it all.”
Claire has had to balance her studies with treatment for Ehlers-Danlos Syndrome, a genetic condition that leads to frequent joint dislocations and potential organ damage.
Through hard work and dedication, along with assistance from the university’s Disability Advice team, she has ensured that her condition has not held her back.
“Leeds Beckett supported me throughout my degree in many different aspects.” She explained. “The Disability Advice team have helped me to overcome any obstacles that my genetic condition posed to my studies.”
In 2016, she was awarded the Bligh Scholarship for her enthusiasm, innovation and high-quality work, and received additional monetary support for her studies.
During her time at the university, Claire has been an active member of the student community, taking as many opportunities as she could to expand her skill set, help others and meet new people.
She added: “I found myself becoming student rep, becoming a part of the student union, talking to potential new students at open days and doing a myriad of extra activities to support the course. I’ve really enjoyed getting involved in activities and events outside of class.”
In her final year, Claire ensured that she had the best opportunity to find full-time work, gaining membership to the Chartered Institute of Environmental Health and completing her studies to a high standard.
This secured her a job in the council, and she is looking forward to continuing to progress her career.
“My plans for the future are to pursue my career as an Environmental Health Officer working within the Local Government Sector.
“I’m excited for what the future holds.”
