Varsity win for Team Beckett
It was lucky 13 for Team Beckett as we ran out overall winners with 32 points to University of Leeds’s 29 in another close encounter between the big city rivals.
Thousands of students from both Leeds Beckett University and the University of Leeds competed in over 60 fixtures in this year’s Varsity across 25 different sports.
2017 was a highly competitive year with very little separating the two universities throughout the competition.
Beckett headed in to Wednesday’s Varsity Festival 8-2 up, aided by victories for the Hockey and Netball teams in the curtain-raisers on Tuesday 3 October, before a full day of exciting sporting action.
At the end of the Festival, the scores were very tight as Beckett edged Uni 31 to 29 with pride on the line heading in to the Rugby Union final.
All attention diverted from the Festival to Headingley Carnegie Stadium where 7,500 fans from the universities descended to watch their top teams in action.
After a nip and tuck first half, Beckett edged their rivals 9-3 heading into the break before turning on the style in the second half to run out eventual 29-8 winners to claim the Varsity Rugby Union crown.
