Transgender Awareness Week
People who are transgender face countless conversations about their gender identity and by using the appropriate pronouns that accurately reflect their gender identity this indicates to the individual that their true gender is acknowledged and respected.
What should you do if you are unsure what pronouns to use?
Here are a few options:
• Call the individual by their name.
• One option is to listen to what those close to the individual refer to them as.
• Another way of facilitating a discussion about pronouns is to display your own either by wearing a pin badge like the ones in the photograph, or on your email signature. This can be added by simply changing your signature settings in outlook (select file, options, mail, create or modify signature.)
• You can also introduce yourself and your pronouns and encourage others to do the same. For example “Hi my name is Kim and my pronouns are She/her.”
If you are in any way unsure of the person’s gender identity the best thing to do is simply ask the question “What preferred gender pronoun (PGP) would you like me/us to use for you?”
