Leeds Beckett graduates triumph in World Triathlon Series opener
Leeds Beckett University graduates and World Triathlon superstars Alex Yee MBE, BSc (Hons) Sport & Exercise Science 2021, and Georgia Taylor-Brown MBE, BSc (Hons) Sport & Exercise Science 2015, both won their opening World Triathlon Championship Series races in Yokohama, Japan.
The Olympic gold and silver medallists both claimed victory in Yokohama in the men’s and women’s triathlon events, as part of the World Triathlon Championship Series.
Alex triumphed in the men’s event, edging rival Hayden Wilde from New Zealand by just 10 seconds in the final sprint to finish in 01:43.30, while Georgia also endured a close finish to the line beating French triathlon star Leonie Perualt by six seconds in 01:55:44.
Both Alex and Georgia were part of the Triathlon Leeds inspired Team GB Mixed Relay team, alongside Leeds Beckett Honorary Graduate Jonny Brownlee MBE and Jessica Learmonth MBE, which won Olympic gold in the inaugural Triathlon Mixed Relay event at Tokyo 2020.
All four athletes have trained with Triathlon Leeds in the build-up to last year’s Olympics, with Georgia, Jonny and Jessica continuing their training in the city.
Both Alex and Georgia claimed silver Olympic silver medals in the individual events at Tokyo 2020 in their Olympic debuts and, alongside Jonny and Jessica, were honoured as MBEs in the Queen’s New Year Honours List.
With the Commonwealth Games and the remainder of the World Triathlon Championship Series on the horizon, there will be plenty of opportunities for more success for the Leeds Beckett alumni this year.
