Leeds Beckett University awarded Athena Swan Bronze charter for gender equality
The university’s submission was one of the first to be assessed against the new, revised criteria of the Athena Swan Charter and awarded the Bronze charter, an achievement reinforcing Leeds Beckett’s continued actions to promote gender equality for our colleagues and our students.
The Athena Swan Charter was established in 2005 to encourage and recognise commitment to advancing the careers of women in science, technology, engineering, maths and medicine (STEMM). Since then, the charter has been transformed to address gender inequalities more broadly within higher education (HE) and ensure its suitability for the future of the sector. Now Leeds Beckett is recognised under this updated framework and will hold the award until 2027.
Leeds Beckett will now be continuing its commitment to gender equality with a new Gender Equality Action Plan which focusses on three strands:
- Ensuring a supportive culture and environment for women, people of colour (both women and men) and trans and non-binary members of our community
- Improving the career paths for women
- Creating equality of opportunity and structural change for all our students
Professor Cathy Barnes, Chair of the Athena Swan Self-Assessment Team and Director of Research and Enterprise at Leeds Beckett University, said: “I would like to share my heartfelt thanks and congratulations to everybody for the tremendous effort, time, and passion they have contributed to this process.
“Without the combined efforts of our supporters from across LBU, the award simply would not have been possible. This is a testament to our continued institutional commitment to gender equality for colleagues and students. We must now look forward to delivering our action plan in this same spirit.”
