Leeds Beckett University Professor Shane Ewen to present his inaugural lecture ‘Forged by Fire’
In his inaugural professorial lecture, Professor Shane Ewen will discuss how histories of fires and burns have been used to inspire creative learning, especially amongst school children in urban communities shaped by their experiences with fire.
During this event, he will consider the personal and collective tragedies involving burning and scalding which have been rooted in the everyday lives practices and spaces of communities throughout the past two centuries in Britain.
His research and teaching interests coalesce around urban history, and the politics and culture of disasters and emergency preparedness.
Professor Shane Ewen, Professor of History at Leeds Beckett University, said: "Forged by Fire aims to inspire young people to change their behaviour by raising awareness of personal and community safety issues through historical stories about fire and burns. It uses the linked practices of co-creation, collaboration and commemoration to inspire change amongst young people.
“Forged by Fire has also inspired me to become a more compassionate researcher and teacher and seek to use my expertise in positive ways that bring lasting benefits to our communities."
Professor Shane Ewen joined Leeds Beckett in 2006. He is co-editor of Urban History, the leading academic journal in his field, and Co-Investigator on the Arts and Humanities research project ‘Forged by Fire: Burns Injury and Identity in Britain, c. 1800-2000’.
He has also worked alongside the Fire and Rescue Service in England and Scotland, the Fire Brigades Union, burns charities and several schools to deliver novel educational and community-engagement resources.
This lecture is part of Leeds Beckett University’s inaugural professorial lecture series.
