Leeds Beckett claim Varsity 2024 title

26 April 2024
Leeds is purple once again after Beckett’s sports teams regained the Varsity trophy in spectacular fashion yesterday.

Thousands of students competed in 70 fixtures between Leeds Beckett and University of Leeds in the annual games, which is the biggest sporting event in the city.

Victory was achieved with clean sweeps in men’s football and basketball, gymnastics, athletics and tennis, followed by victory in both games at the showpiece rugby finale in front of over 10,000 at Headingley Stadium.

Netball 1 edged a tight encounter 49-47 on Monday night and men’s basketball 1s winning 47-37 on Tuesday, both in front of sell-out partisan crowds in the Beckett Sports arena.

The results on the tennis court continued a remarkable run in which Leeds Beckett hasn’t dropped a set in six years, while our track and field team dominated on home turf at Headingley campus.

Jo Mannion, Student Sport Manager, Leeds Beckett University, said:

“It was a fantastic event again this year. It is obviously great to win, but whatever the result its always amazing to see two sets of student athletes competing well in the true spirit of friendly rivalry.

“Thanks to the teams for their dedication and the fans for turning out in their thousands. It takes a huge amount of organisation from everyone at Leeds Beckett, Leeds University Union, Leeds Beckett Students’ Union, our partners at Leeds Rhinos and of course our sponsors, Pickards Properties, who continue to back such an amazing part of the city’s sporting calendar and many athlete’s careers.

“While the trophy has been handed over, the sporting action hasn’t stopped. You can support our efforts to retain the trophy as soon as next week.“
