Improving our campus spaces
Completed work
The most visible change is the removal of the temporary Carnegie School of Education building on Headingley Campus. This building could never have been permanent, and we are now reinstating the car parking in line with the planning consent. The building has been taken down to be re-used – we will provide news of its new home and use at a later date.
We’ve also refreshed the décor and furniture in a number of teaching spaces in Broadcasting Place A, created a new teaching space in Portland and improved circulation spaces in Fairfax Hall.
We’ve also invested in pathways on Headingley campus to improve accessibility and the campus environment. Maintenance on the flagstones on the James Graham entrance was completed earlier this week.
Making our buildings safer through investment in asbestos removal, upgrades to our CCTV systems and a new barrier at South Lodge entrance to Headingley campus.
We are modernising buildings and supporting decarbonisation, including upgrading to more energy-efficient lighting in Rose Bowl and emergency lighting in Bronte.
Ongoing improvement
We're continuing to invest in our estate to improve buildings, facilities and the overall campus experience. Below is an update on a number of maintenance and improvement projects currently taking place across the University.
Sheila Silver Library – Ground Floor Entrance
What we're doing:
Improvements to the ground floor entrance area to create an even better space to study, work and connect. This includes more comfortable seating, improved accessibility, refreshed help and support spaces, and a dedicated Study Skills support area.
Access and impact:
The library remains open as normal throughout the works, and all services continue to be available.
Expected completion:
Early to mid October.
Leeds School of Arts – Upper Ground Revolving Door
What we're doing:
We are currently investigating a repair or replacement solution for the upper ground revolving door and are awaiting further information from our contractor.
Access and impact:
The building remains fully accessible via the main entrance from Portland Way.
Expected completion:
To be confirmed.
External Redecorations
What we're doing:
A number of external redecoration projects are planned or currently taking place across both campuses to maintain and improve the appearance of University buildings and facilities.
Access and impact:
The majority of these works are being carried out externally and are not expected to cause significant disruption to teaching, meetings or other University activities. Where specific disruptions are anticipated, affected building users will be informed in advance in email from the Estates & Facilities Helpdesk.
Questions or concerns:
If you have any concerns about how these works may affect your area or activities, please contact EF-Helpdesk@leedsbeckett.ac.uk.
Expected completion:
Works are being completed in phases, with individual project completion dates communicated locally where relevant.
