Charity Fun Run to be held at our University
The run will take place on Thursday 7 June from 6pm and will guide participants around the scenic Headingley Campus and Beckett Park following a Zumba-style warm up. All of the £10 entrance fee will go directly to Macmillan. All participants will receive a T-shirt, a goody bag and £5 Sweatshop gift voucher.
Sarah Humphreys, Sports Participation Manager at Leeds Met, decided to organise the event because similar events in previous years had been discontinued, despite great levels of participation. "The women's fun run that used to be held here attracted well over 200 runners, so it seemed logical to start something similar up. Macmillan offer a source of support to all those affected by cancer, not only patients, but also their families and carers, and we are so pleased to be able to help support such a worthwhile charity."
Although the event isn't a race, there will still be prizes on offer for the first five men and first five women to cross the finish line. A barbecue on the University's Headingley Campus will provide much needed after-run-refuelling for those involved whilst a steel drums band will provide entertainment. Free parking is available.
Every day 27 people in West Yorkshire are told they have cancer, and 42% of us will receive a cancer diagnosis at some point in our lifetime.
Clara White, the Leeds Fundraising Manager for Macmillan Cancer Support, said: "On behalf of everyone at Macmillan, thank you to the team at Leeds Met and everyone who has registered and will register to take part in this fantastic local event! We rely on the generosity of the public for 96% of our income so we really couldn't do it without you! Every pound of sponsorship raised will be helping people living with cancer. £25 could pay for a Macmillan nurse for 1 hour so you will be making a huge difference."
