Leeds Met sporting Arena showcased
Special guests from England Basketball, Sport England, West Yorkshire Sport and Leeds City Council attended the event on Saturday 16 November to see the transformation of the former Gymnastics Centre into the state-of-the-art facility which is home to the Carnegie Basketball Club.
The project started in April this year and was supported by colleagues in University Sport, the Carnegie Faculty and the wider university - particularly Estates Services who successfully led the building programme.
Sally Nickson, Head of Sport, commented: "The new Arena at Leeds Met is a superb facility that will be a benefit to both our students and the community. With the support of England Basketball, Sport England and our University, we have been able to develop the Arena into a top class facility, and further strengthen and enhance our partnership with England Basketball."
The Arena is a facility for academic delivery and recreational activity as well as camps and events. It supports players, coaches, officials and volunteers of all ages in the local community and our University.
As well as the unveiling of the plaque, guests and spectators enjoyed a thrilling basketball match between Leeds Carnegie and Bradford Dragons in a National League Division One clash, which Leeds won 73-67.
Keith Mair, Chief Executive of England Basketball Association, said: "This was my first visit to the refurbished facility and I was very impressed with the layout and its ability to satisfy the need for a top playing venue, university indoor sports and a community basketball club. It represents an excellent investment working in partnership with Leeds Carnegie Basketball Club and Leeds Metropolitan University."
