Leeds Varsity to celebrate 150 years of rugby
The game is part of the 150 years of rugby in Leeds celebrations and will be the curtain-raiser to one of the most prestigious fixtures in the rugby league calendar, Leeds Rhinos v Wigan Warriors in the First Utility Super League.
Leeds Metropolitan University has an illustrious record in rugby league with a string of titles and a prestigious list of alumni including Kevin Sinfield and Jamie Peacock as well as current students who are competing at some of the highest levels in rugby league. Leeds Met Rugby League Club is the most successful student team in British Universities and Colleges Sport (BUCS) history, winning the BUCS title for the past eight years and currently sitting at the top of the BUCS Rugby League Premier North table.
Former Rhino's star Keith Senior is now part of the coaching set-up at the University of Leeds's rugby league club, which has seen major leaps forward in both individual talent and as a team. The team finished third in the student league in 2013.
Students of both universities are invited to support their respective teams and a special student ticket package has been put together to include a ticket in the South Stand, a complimentary drink at the game and access to a post-game after party. The £15 ticket includes entry to both the varsity game, which kicks off at 5.45pm, and the Leeds Rhinos v Wigan Warriors game, kicking off at 8pm.
In addition to the varsity curtain-raiser game there will be a host of varsity-themed entertainment in between the two games as the two universities go head-to-head in various on-pitch challenges including an 'it's a knock out' style race, a dance-off featuring dance teams from both universities and a musical act from each university.
The student ticket package can be purchased at www.leedsvarsity.com or by visiting Leeds Metropolitan's Headingley Campus Sports Office.
