Love and Marriage is the theme of this year's Leeds Pride
Our University will be at Leeds Pride on Sunday 3 August and we are looking for volunteers and marchers. All staff and students are invited to show their support and represent our University on the march: LGBT staff, allies, families, friends and even pets - all are welcome!
Our LGBT equality group was set up to ensure that discrimination is eradicated and diversity is celebrated within our University. Among other aims the group ensures that students and staff feel comfortable in their working environment and that they are aware of a variety of support networks offering advice and guidance. The group works closely with our LGBT community to ensure that students and staff are involved within the LGBT forum at our University. Additionally, the group contributes to policy development within the university to maintain our goal of providing a welcoming environment for all our staff and students.
This year our LGBT group will be attending the Leeds Pride 2014 event. Leeds Pride is an annual celebration of all things LGBT. Pride has seen huge success in recent years with a steady increase in attendees (last year saw an attendance of 30,000!). The event celebrates diversity and promotes equality, with live music and carnival entertainment. This year our University's LGBT group will be at the heart of this event. Our LGBT group will be managing a stall to highlight career opportunities at our University and providing prospectuses and other material for potential students. This years' theme is love and marriage to coincide with the recent legalisation of same sex marriage.
As well as Leeds Pride, our LGBT group has worked at various events around Leeds, including organising social events to coincide with LGBT month in February and The International Day against Homophobia and Transphobia (IDAHO) in May. The group also organizes a variety of social events throughout the year to maintain the stronghold of the LGBT community within our University.
All those wishing to march in the parade should meet in the Shelia Silver Building foyer at 1:30pm.
Leeds Pride 2014 will commence in Millennium Square at 11:00 on Saturday 3 August.
