Man v Mountain leader to talk at Leeds Met
The talk, entitled 'Decision making in extreme situations', will take place on Tuesday 5 March from 5.30pm-7pm at Headingley Carnegie Stadium and will see Dave discuss how he conceived, planned and led the expedition while maintaining his position as a strong member of the climbing team himself. The expedition was filmed for a televised documentary, 'Everest: Man v. Mountain', and was highly publicised in the media, earned Dave an MBE for his outstanding leadership.
He commented: "The planning and teamwork involved took over my life for three years and set us on a mission to leave no stone unturned in the relentless preparation to achieve our goal. This approach gave us the very best chance of being successful on the mountain itself."
His inspirational presentation will address his experiences of planning and leading the expedition on Everest's spectacular West Ridge, tackling the leadership skills and determination that was needed to select the right team, motivate and engage them and build a shared vision. With stunning images from the rare vantage point of the West Ridge of Mount Everest, it is a presentation that will inspire, move, entertain and leave a lasting impression. With 13 Himalayan expeditions under his belt, Dave continues to organise and lead regular challenging endeavours.
Supported by Yorkshire Bank, the lecture is the second of the free public sessions in Leeds Met's 'Carnegie Conversations' guest lecture series, organised by the University's Carnegie Faculty.
Future lectures to be held in the series include a session on Tuesday 7 May which will feature a Q&A where former British Lions player John Bentley will interview England Head Coach Stuart Lancaster; Gareth Davies, Dean of Leeds Metropolitan's Carnegie Faculty and former Wales rugby captain and British Lions player and former British Lions coach Sir Ian McGeechan. On Monday 3 June, Leeds Rhinos and Great Britain captain Kevin Sinfield will present while on Monday 1 July international cricketers Alec Stewart and Jason Gillespie will be interviewed by South African cricketer Dave Callaghan about the impending Ashes series.
