Steve Cram lecture launches Carnegie Conversations lecture series
The event, entitled 'Inspirational leadership - from sport to business and back', took place on Wednesday 20 February at Headingley Carnegie Stadium and saw Steve discuss how to apply sports principles that create leadership best practice and explore how sport and business arenas can work together to create excellence.
Supported by Yorkshire Bank, it is one of six free sessions in Leeds Met's 'Carnegie Conversations' guest lecture series, organised by the University's Carnegie Faculty.
Steve coaches Leeds Metropolitan University's current BSc (Hons) Sport and Exercise Science student, Laura Weightman who represented Team GB in the London 2012 Olympics, where she qualified for the 1500m final, finishing 11th in her first major championship.
With a sporting career spanning three decades, Steve first ran aged 17 at the Commonwealth Games in 1978. His achievements include six gold medals at the Commonwealth Games and European and World Championships, and a silver medal in the 1500m race at the 1984 Los Angeles Olympics. Since retiring from competitive sport, Steve has become a television commentator - working for Eurosport and Channel 4, before becoming the Chief Athletics commentator for the BBC.
The next lecture in the series will see Dave Bunting, who led an elite British team of mountaineers in an attempt to climb the formidable and rarely climbed West Ridge of Mount Everest, is to speak about the challenging expedition.
The talk, entitled 'Decision making in extreme situations', will take place on Tuesday 5 March from 5.30pm-7pm at Headingley Carnegie Stadium and will see Dave discuss how he conceived, planned and led the expedition while maintaining his position as a strong member of the climbing team himself.
Other lectures to be held in the 'Carnegie Conversations' series include a session hosted by England rugby union Head Coach Stuart Lancaster who will join Gareth Davies, Dean of Leeds Metropolitan's Carnegie Faculty, former Wales rugby captain and British Lions player, on Tuesday 7 May and Leeds Rhinos captain Kevin Sinfield on Monday 3 June.
