Students aim higher with Fiyah
Based in Leeds, Fiyah! magazine is the creation of Multimedia Technology BSc (Hons) undergraduates Jack Fletcher, Billy Watson, Steve Jones-Robertson and Michael McInerney. A high-quality luxury publication - the content focuses on independent music, art and style from the region.
And while the project was initiated for their university course work, Jack, aged 23, said it was the friends' intention to carry it on as a business beyond their upcoming summer graduations.
"Putting together the first issue of Fiyah! was a real labour of love," commented Jack. "The four of us did absolutely everything from writing the content to photographing the model for the front cover, to securing a deal to get the magazine printed.
"We were careful to limit the number of adverts in the magazine. We are aware that when people pick up a magazine to read that most ideally want content over adverts. We are really proud of Fiyah! and the first issue. It's a free magazine, but the quality of the product from the paper used to the detail of the design on every page equates to that of paid-for magazines. We had a launch party at Distrikt bar in Leeds last month and the support and feedback we've had has been nothing but positive."
The group are yet to determine how many issues will be published of Fiyah! annually, but readers can expect to see the magazine's accompanying website www.fiyah.co.uk updated regularly.
Steve added: "Independent acts are what we strive to unearth as we believe some of the greatest talents out there today are yet to be found. Because we brand ourselves as an 'Art, Style and Music' magazine, we can delve into the most unique talents in Leeds."
Fiyah! took the team three months to create from start to finish.
