Students ready for Lift Off
The event - which celebrates and showcases innovative performances, installations and exhibitions by final year students, will run from May 12-16, in and around Leeds Metropolitan's city campus and will be open to the public from 12pm to 9pm each day.
The work is that of students on the BA (Hons) Art, Event, Performance and BA (Hons) Dance courses and will feature over 50 projects including live art, dance, installations, exhibitions and performances, with highlights including 'a visit to the Mermaid of the North'; an exploration of eversion/ inversion; 'Spiderman choreography', and explorations of life and love and Northerness.
BA (Hons) Art, Event, Performance student, Melanie Purdie, has taken on the role of Student Event Manager for the festival. She commented: "Preparing for our Lift Off Festival has been great. I've really enjoyed watching my peers create their shows. They have been working towards creating a performance which adapts to the environment in which the festival is set, and they have all been helping each other within their small student community. There's some exciting new and emerging work on show as we watch the students turn to artists ? and that transition is what the festival is all about. Once you come to the festival you will be able to judge this for yourself."
BA (Hons) Art, Event, Performance Course Leader, Gillian Dyson, added: "The Lift Off Festival is a fantastic opportunity for students to showcase their creativity to industry professionals and friends. The students explore body, movement, site, narrative and duration through a wide range of approaches. The live performances represent the latest methods in contemporary devising and choreography and are perhaps an indication of the direction of contemporary British performance."
Events are free however some have limited seating. Further information can be found at the festival information desk located outside Perform 1, Calverley Building of Leeds Metropolitan University City Campus and in the Yorkshire Dance foyer, open every day from 10am - 9pm.
