Training and Development

Research Training Programme (RTP)

The Research Training Programme (RTP) supports your development throughout your research degree and provides a framework for planning, undertaking and reflecting on your development as a researcher.

Working with your supervisory team, you will identify and engage with activities and opportunities that support your research, professional development and future career aspirations. The RTP is compulsory for all postgraduate researchers studying for a PhD, MPhil or Professional Doctorate.

The RTP Guidance provides further information on the purpose of the RTP, expectations for postgraduate researchers and supervisors, and how development is reviewed throughout your degree.

Your development needs will evolve throughout your degree. Regular discussions with your supervisory team can help you identify development priorities and opportunities that are relevant to your research project, experience and future aspirations.

SAM includes a range of tools to support this process, including a Training Needs Analysis, Training Plan and Training Log. These can be used to help identify development needs, plan activities and reflect on your development throughout your research degree.

Research support within the library offer a range of support for our postgraduate research students and staff, including tailored PhD student support and Skills for Learning, a collection of online resources to support the development of academic skills.
