Participants
This project involves participants from minoritised ethnic groups in the UK, exploring health inequities, how to tackle increased dementia risk and promote brain health.
Aims
- Identify evidence gaps on dementia risk with people from minoritised ethnic groups;
- Collaborate with people from minoritised ethnic groups to develop relevant research questions;
- Explore mechanisms contributing to health inequities in dementia risk among people from minoritised ethnic groups;
- Disseminate evidence-based information on dementia risk and brain health in accessible and inclusive formats to ethnically diverse communities.
Key findings
Dementia risk research with minoritised ethnic groups is still lacking. In particular, the impact of discrimination and the interaction between risk factors was identified as key by minoritised ethnic communities, but research on this was scarce. This project will continue to focus on exploring these gaps to develop evidence-based recommendations for personalised risk reduction with people from minoritised ethnic communities.
Funding
Previous research related to this project has been funded the National Institute for Health and Care Research Applied Research Collaboration Yorkshire and Humber (NIHR ARCYH), the Alzheimer’s Society Post-Doctoral Research Fellowships (funding award number: NIHR200166) and the Research Design Service of Yorkshire and Humber. Related community engagement work was funded by Alzheimer's Research UK through the Inspire Fund.
