Centre for Sport Coaching

Long term in situ study of sport coaching practice and effectiveness

Responding to the growing recognition that to understand the practical and social complexities of sport coaching researchers need to spend time with coaches, participants, performers, and important others, in their coaching contexts.

Long term in situ study of sport coaching practice and effectiveness

the challenge

Centre staff have undertaken long-term ethnographic case study (LECS) research in the performer development and high-performance domains in canoeing, rugby league, swimming, and triathlon with project lasting anywhere from 12 months to two years.

The approach

The projects have been undertaken using the embedded, relational, and embedded (ERE) model of/for sport coaching practice (North, 2017), providing a novel but powerful theoretical underpinning, and have been supported by British Canoeing, The RFL, British Para-swimming, British Triathlon and UK Sport.

The impact

The projects provide a detailed understanding of sport coaching, the factors underpinning effectiveness, the link between ethical coaching and effectiveness, as well as highlighting what good practice ideas can be shared across domain and sport, and those that are much more contextual.

This work not only provides an understanding of coaching practice and effectiveness, but also contributes to emerging ideas on coach learning, development, and education.
