This website was created by history students from Leeds Beckett University as part of the Public History Project module led by Dr Henry Irving.

Public History Project is a final year module that involves collaborating working beyond the university. Previous projects have included work on the Leeds Blitz and the Monuments of Leeds.

This year the students were tasked with creating a digital timeline to explore the way David Oluwale has been remembered from 1969 to the present.

The students were asked to address the following questions:

  1. How has David Oluwale been remembered in Leeds?
  2. Why has his story been remembered?
  3. What impact have the different forms of remembrance had?

The students identified over 50 different examples but were asked to narrow this down to around 10 different entries to ensure they had time to research them in depth. Their choices were based on their reach and impact. But the students also wanted to reflect the variety of ways that David Oluwale’s story has been told.

This project was carried out in collaboration with the David Oluwale Memorial Association. It is a charity that promotes equality, diversity and racial harmony by telling the story of David Oluwale. You can find out more about its work at rememberoluwale.org.

The School of Humanities and Social Sciences has a memorandum of understanding with the David Oluwale Memorial Association and is proud to support its work.
