Choosing a Senior Mental Health Lead Training Course

Access quality-assured training

The Department for Education (DfE) is offering a grant for a senior member of school or college staff to access quality-assured training to develop the knowledge and skills to implement an effective whole school or college approach to mental health and wellbeing in their setting. Further information on senior mental health lead training can be found on gov.uk. The DfE has produced a short video outlining the grant application process, which can be found below.

The Carnegie Centre of Excellence for Mental Health in Schools is the quality assurance partner to the DfE and can be contacted via smhl@leedsbeckett.ac.uk.

Choosing a course

Senior mental health leads may now proceed to book a DfE quality assured course.

There is a diverse range of training courses available to choose from that consider the varying learning needs of senior leads and cover four learning levels:

  • Beginner: Senior mental health lead is new to the role and / or has not previously completed senior mental health leadership training
  • Intermediate: Senior mental health lead is familiar with the role and / or has completed limited senior mental health leadership training
  • Advanced: Senior mental health lead is established in their role and / or has completed comprehensive senior mental health leadership training
  • Expert and System Leadership: Senior mental health lead is established in their role, provides leadership beyond their own setting, and may now be seeking a recognised qualification

To support senior leads in choosing a course that most closely meets their needs, we have developed two tools below.
