A live performance in the dark pop genre inspired by the life and work of singer songwriter Jason Molina (1973-2013). Our intent is to explore and present the multi-layered meanings, textures and sonic signatures of the dark pop genre through a creative, emotional response to the life and work of Molina. Our starting point is to explore further the idea that a person’s creativity continues beyond their death in other work, which it inspires. Whilst the stimulus may be the unfulfilled potential of Molina, we are interested in exploring further the mythology of the ‘tortured artist’ as there is much to suggest Molina did not ascribe to this stereotype (Zara, C 2012 and Schlesinger, J, 2003). The intention is to get beneath the mythologising tendencies of an audience and industry toward the dead, self-destructive, tortured artist (Bradshaw, A & Holbrook, MB, 2007).
