Design a new course
This page provides links and guidance on the creation of a new face-to-face course. It includes documents to help you design learning outcomes and ensure the course is inclusive. The page also links to other areas of the University, including the Quality Assurance Service, to guide you through the formal process of gaining approval for a new course.
Links to resources, support and guidance for creating inclusive, accessible courses and curricula:
- Inclusive induction (webpage). Explore how inclusive induction supports student engagement and belonging. This resource prompts reflection on designing induction activities that respond to diverse student transition experiences
- Decolonising the curriculum (webpage). Understand what decolonising the curriculum involves beyond diversifying reading lists. This resource prompts reflection on challenging dominant knowledge structures and creating more inclusive curricula
- Inclusive practice (webpage). This page brings together a wide range of resources relating to inclusive and accessible practice within teaching and learning
These six principles underpin the design of all our undergraduate and postgraduate courses and are fundamental to our approach. They aim to enhance student continuation, completion and success.
Course teams are responsible for adopting these academic principles and applying them across all aspects of course design and delivery.
We build our courses around academic levels of study, assessing students at each level and naming awards according to the level completed.
To ensure consistency across modules, courses, and awards, we need to design learning outcomes that clearly define level expectations. These learning outcomes drive both assessment and the learning activities that prepare students for success. The Centre for Learning and Teaching has produced a guidance document on writing level learning outcomes to help you design modules and courses with confidence.
