Adding journal articles and dissertation examples

How can I add a journal article to MyBeckett?

The most effective way of adding a journal article to MyBeckett is to either copy the stable link obtained via Discover or to add the article to the online Reading list.

It is possible to download an electronic journal article and mount it directly within MyBeckett but only if the journal’s licensing allows it.  This method is not recommended as there is no single licence in place to allow the copying and pasting or uploading of electronic journal articles into MyBeckett. You will need to check the terms and conditions, or licence, for each individual electronic journal provider before proceeding.

If you have queries regarding licensing, please contact the Copyright Clearance Service.

Some publishers allow parts of their electronic journals to be copied under the terms of the Copyright Licensing Agency (CLA) licence. For further information contact digitisation@leedsbeckett.ac.uk

Harvard Business Review

Articles are for private individual use. This journal is not intended for use as assigned course material and its content cannot be included in VLEs (such as MyBeckett), electronic reserves, electronic course packs, via persistent linking or by any other means of incorporating the content into course resources.

For dissertation or major project modules we recommend you share examples of past work with students via MyBeckett.

You can upload files using our guide to uploading files.

If you do not have the original files you can extract them from Turnitin (if you need help with this task please get in touch with the Digital Learning Service).

Most electronic journal providers (except Harvard Business Review) allow article level linking provided that any login procedures are not bypassed.

A quick method of finding a stable, authenticated link to an online article is via the Library search engine, Discover.

Enter the article title in the Discover search box on the Library website to locate the article. The accuracy of your search will be improved by enclosing the title in quotation marks.

To ensure that Discover only finds articles with full text access, it is possible to add a Full Text filter to your search (located under ‘Content type’ in the left hand menu).

If the article appears in the list of returned results (it may not be top of the list), click on the Share button to the right of the article display box. This will display the link to the article, for example: https://leedsbeckett.on.worldcat.org/v2/oclc/4646650127

Click on Copy link to copy it. This link can then be added to MyBeckett.

Although the link does not open the article directly, the full text article is accessed by clicking Access Online then View full text. The advantage of linking via Discover is that the link will remain stable even if a journal changes provider or to a different subscription package.

It is unwise to simply copy the URL in the Address bar at the top of your screen as in some cases this might be specific to that particular session and will not work as a link for future sessions.

Some resources are not searchable via Discover.

On rare occasions the Library may have a current subscription but the article cannot be located via Discover.

It is still possible to manually create a link by following this formula:

First use the base URL:

To create a targeted search, you then need to add the following details:

  • &issn=
  • &year=
  • &volume=
  • &issue=
  • &spage=

For example, an article available via Springer:

Freitag, Frederick (2003) Preventative Treatment for Migraine and Tension-Type Headaches. CNS Drugs, 17 (6): 373-382. ISSN 1172-7047

http://leedsbeckett.idm.oclc.org/login?url=https://leedsbeckett.on.worldcat.org/atoztitles/link?ver=Z39.88-2004&issn=1172-7047&year=2003&volume=17&issue=6&spage=373

This type of link will connect to the article via the Find Full Text page, displaying all options for connecting to the article. You will need to select “View Full Text” to view the full text. If off-campus, you may be prompted to login with your Username and Password first.

If you have any queries about article linking on MyBeckett (not Reading list queries) please contact the Library Online Team libraryonline@leedsbeckett.ac.uk. For queries about linking or bookmarking on Reading lists, see below.

A simple way of providing access to journal articles is to add them to a module’s online Reading list.

Contact your Library Academic Support team for help and advice.

Guidelines on creating and editing online reading lists are also available on our staff help pages.

Except under certain exceptions such as for private study, this can only be done with permission from the journal publishers or under licence.

This includes scanning print articles to place in MyBeckett or on another network, or for distribution via a CD, USB or email.

To enable the scanning of print articles for teaching, the University has signed a licence with the Copyright Licensing Agency (CLA) which permits scanning by the Digitisation Service from print journals held by the Library, under certain terms and conditions.

Contact the Digitisation Service (based in Library Services) on 0113 812 7472 or email digitisation@leedsbeckett.ac.uk for further information.
