A K M Tariqul Islam is a final year law student from Bangladesh. Here, he shares his overwhelmingly positive experience of studying at Leeds Law School and how he has found a supportive community whilst here.

Tell us a bit about yourself?

Hello, I'm A K M Tariqul Islam and I’m from Bangladesh and I am currently pursuing my undergraduate degree at Leeds Beckett University in the UK. As well as being a dedicated law student, I have a deep passion for traveling. Exploring diverse cultures and landscapes has always fascinated me, offering a unique perspective that enriches my understanding of the world.

Balancing my academic pursuits with the excitement of discovering new places allows me to cultivate a well-rounded and open-minded approach to life. As I navigate through my studies and explore different corners of the globe, I find inspiration in the intersection of law and the varied human experiences that shape our global society. 

Why did you choose to study Law at Leeds Beckett University?

Choosing to study Law at Leeds Beckett University was a well-considered decision rooted in both academic and personal factors. Firstly, the university's reputable law programme aligned with my passionate pursuit of legal studies. The curriculum's comprehensive approach and commitment to excellence appealed to my aspirations as a law student.

Moreover, the opportunity to study in the United Kingdom would provide a unique global perspective on legal systems, enhancing my understanding of law in an international context. The vibrant and diverse cultural environment of Leeds, combined with the university's commitment to fostering a supportive academic community, made it an ideal destination for my undergraduate studies.

An additional compelling factor was the generous scholarship awarded by Leeds Beckett University. This financial support not only underscored the institution's commitment to fostering academic talent but also made my educational journey more accessible. I was lucky to receive an international scholarship and this reinforced my decision, allowing me to focus on my studies and immerse myself in the enriching experience of both legal education and cultural exploration in the UK.

What do you enjoy most about the course?

I really like studying law at Leeds Beckett University because of how they teach. In my first semester, I learned about Company Law, Intellectual Property, and Employment Law. We learn through a mixture of detailed lectures and group sessions on campus where we can discuss the topic and ask questions. There are also interactive seminars where we solve real legal problems related to these topics. This way of learning helps a lot.

The teachers and staff at Leeds Beckett are super friendly and helpful. They make studying law enjoyable. I feel supported and encouraged to do well in my studies. Overall, the way they teach and the supportive environment make my experience here really great.

How have you found the experience of studying as an international student at Leeds Beckett?

Being an international student at Leeds Beckett has been an incredibly positive experience. The university's environment is welcoming, and fellow students are cooperative, open-minded, and accepting. Living in university accommodation has been particularly enriching as it facilitates interaction with other international students, fostering cultural exchange and friendships.

From my classes to the campus and even in the accommodation, I've encountered many friendly people. The university's commitment to creating a supportive community for international students has made my transition seamless. Engaging with diverse cultures and making friends has been a highlight of my experience, extending beyond the classroom to various aspects of university life.

Living in university accommodation has provided more than just a place to stay; it has become a hub for international friendships and cultural sharing. I've had the opportunity to explore different parts of the UK with these newfound friends, creating lasting memories. 

Overall, the inclusive atmosphere and the chance to connect with fellow international students have made my time at Leeds Beckett truly memorable.

What are your plans for the future? 

Looking ahead, my plans for the future involve pursuing a career as a barrister, and this aspiration is a key factor in my decision to study in the UK. After completing my undergraduate degree at Leeds Beckett University, I aim to undertake a post-graduate Barrister training course and pursue a Master of Laws (LLM) degree.

The comprehensive legal education and diverse cultural exposure I'm gaining at Leeds Beckett are crucial foundations for my future endeavours. The interactive and practical approach to learning, coupled with the supportive environment, prepares me well for the challenges of legal practice. Additionally, living in the UK provides an opportunity to immerse myself in the British legal system, an invaluable experience for someone aspiring to become a barrister.

Ultimately, my goal is to contribute to the legal profession with a focus on advocacy and justice. The rich academic experience at Leeds Beckett, combined with my future plans for specialised training and advanced studies, aligns with my vision of becoming a successful barrister in the future.
