Course: BA (Hons) Business and Management

Can you tell us a bit about yourself and why you chose to study your course?

Originally from Lincolnshire, I moved to Leeds for the vibrant city life and to complete my undergraduate Business and Management degree. I am incredibly driven and have always taken a keen interest in the world of business but taking the business A-level solidified my desire to do an undergraduate degree.

I chose Leeds Beckett because the range of modules and experience gained really stood out to me. I liked that you could get a taste for many different business areas but specialise if you choose to. The range of companies that the business school works with is fantastic and presents lots of opportunities for future employment or placements. Overall, it felt like the perfect course in an amazing city!

Tell us about your experience of working on your student project - what was it about and what work did it involve?

Over my two years so far, I have completed a range of theory and practical based modules. I often complete groupwork presentations, case studies and reports into real businesses giving an opportunity to apply the theory and knowledge you learn. Often the workload can seem daunting at first, but staff are always there to help and doing it bit by bit really helps!

Perhaps some of the most practical modules are Business in Action and Applied Management Practice as these allow students to work on their own development and business acumen which is ideal for graduation and helps you when looking for a graduate job.

What have you enjoyed most about the course and what are your plans for when you graduate?

In my time so far, I have really enjoyed the opportunity to meet lots of new people and work collectively on tasks. I have particularly enjoyed the Business in Action module where, in teams we are assigned a task for a real business, and we had to solve it. This gave the opportunity to be creative and help a business at the same time. Perhaps one of the biggest highlights is when one of the companies liked my team’s idea and are now using it! This really helped me to think critically about the practicalities within a business and how they might solve problems.

When I graduate, I’m hoping to go into business consultancy and continue solving problems for businesses as I love seeing the transformation take place. I have recently been offered a consulting summer internship and am hoping to gain experience for when I graduate.

What would you say to someone who is thinking about studying your course?

If you’re thinking about studying this course, making a final decision can be an uncertain time - I’ve been there! I highly recommend this course for an overview of different business areas and where you can take your career. Going to open days and offer holder events gives you an opportunity to see the university and talk to current staff and students (you can also ask as many questions as you like!) which is always useful.

This course presents so many opportunities to experience different aspects of a business and gain real insight into the skills you develop. I have thoroughly enjoyed working with fellow students and real businesses and being in such a lovely city is a massive bonus!
