Tell us a bit about yourself and what brought you to Leeds Beckett.
I've always had an entrepreneurial streak. While most teenagers were just getting through school, I was already buying and selling online, running small ventures, and testing out business ideas. I knew I wanted to study something that would take that instinct to the next level and give me the tools to turn it into a lasting career.
I chose to study BA (Hons) International Business at Leeds Beckett because I wanted a course that offered real-world experience and a global perspective. As well as exploring the theory, I wanted to get out there and understand how business operates across different cultures and countries. Leeds Beckett delivered on that, and more.
How has your course benefited you?
I'd say the practical approach the course takes to applying the theory we learn about, particularly to current events, is a real benefit to studying BA (Hons) International Business at Leeds Beckett. We discuss various real-world issues that are really relevant, including the recent US tariffs, Brexit and sustainability.
Recently we had a lecture about nearshoring - where companies are bringing their operations closer to home. To start with, the class was a bit unsure. But when we found out the reasons why businesses are considering this, including for sustainability reasons to reduce their carbon footprint, and boosting local economies and job markets, it just clicked. It was really interesting to dive into the topic in a way I hadn't thought about it before.
"The course has been great, especially for understanding where the world's heading."
How has your time at Leeds Beckett helped shape your career?
Before I started my degree, I already had plenty of ambition and some practical experience. I was looking for an opportunity to open more doors. Leeds Beckett gave me the structure and confidence I needed to turn that energy into a clear path.
I learnt how to think strategically, communicate effectively, and understand the global forces that influence business decisions. One of the best aspects of the course is how it encourages you to apply what you're learning in practical settings.
The course has also provided ample opportunity to develop key skills needed to compete in today's tough graduate job markets. Specifically, the chance to really hone my public speaking has been incredibly valuable. Throughout the course, many assignments have required me to present in seminars on specific businesses or sectors, providing an insight into the kinds of presentations I'll be expected to deliver in interviews and my career.
What's next for you after graduation?
I've got the perfect graduate role lined up at international recruitment firm Mackenzie Stuart starting later this year. I always knew I wanted to work internationally. I like operating across borders, it's quite fascinating, it gives that kind of broader perspective on markets, trade and cultural nuances.
Thanks to my time at Leeds Beckett, I don't just leave with a degree. I've developed a global mindset. I know how to adapt, lead, and continue learning.
