Leeds Law School celebrates student success with 2020/21 awards

Leeds Law School at Leeds Beckett University has announced this year’s student award winners, in partnership with leading law firms across the region.

Students celebrate, throwing gold glitter ribbons in the air

Celebrating the academic success, hard work and resounding talent of students at the School, achievement prizes were awarded for highest performing students in different modules, as well as recognition for the overall highest performing student across each year group. Prizes included mini pupillages and work experience at top legal firms, mentoring and career consultation opportunities, as well as cash prizes generously donated by the prize sponsors.

Dean of Leeds Law School, Professor Deveral Capps, said: “The students were all worthy winners and it was a privilege to reward their special achievements. I feel very proud of the high standard of academic talent we are producing at Leeds Law School.”

Student Abi Morley said of her prize: "The importance of client care in the world of work cannot be overlooked, especially in the legal field. The skills I learnt during this module are invaluable both inside, but especially outside the classroom. I am incredibly grateful for my teaching during my time with Leeds Law School.”

Jasmine Cottage added: “Winning a prize from Leeds Law School felt so rewarding, it is an incredible feeling to have hard work recognised. After winning my first prize, and realising there were awards to be won, my motivation massively increased to try and win another. It’s a really encouraging scheme and something I feel so proud of achieving.”

Melanie Hall, partner at Ridley and Hall, explained the reason behind the law firm’s sponsorship of the awards:“We are delighted to sponsor a student prize for such an important piece of work on mental health law.  Mental health is so important to us as a firm, especially given the turmoil caused by the pandemic. We hope that our prize of offering a one-to-one consultation with the winning student will fundamentally encourage and boost their future career within the legal profession, and help to offer direction, tips and advice during these difficult times. We fully appreciate that arranging work experience and one to one time with prospective firms is more difficult to come by at the moment, but we hope that our consultation will aid this. We wish all Leeds Law School students the best of luck with their chosen careers and look forward to meeting the winner of this prize.”

Lisa Geary, Partner at Capsticks, added: “Capsticks LLP is delighted to sponsor the Annual Prize for Personal Injury and Clinical Negligence at Leeds Law School and to acknowledge the achievement of outstanding law students in this module. As a specialist healthcare and housing national law firm, we are particularly delighted to make an award to a student excelling in the area of clinical negligence in which we have specialist expertise. We are proud to support local universities in cities where our offices are located and to offer students an opportunity to enjoy work experience with us in recognition of their performance. Many congratulations to Jenna Pengilley as prize winner in 2021!”

The prizegiving is an annual initiative, which gives students deserved recognition for their achievements, and allows Leeds Law School to further align with local employers to ensure continued talent feeds into the legal sector in Leeds and beyond.
