Our work was submitted with LBU’s Carnegie School of Sport as part of Unit 24 Sport and Exercise Sciences, Leisure and Tourism and returned outstanding results.

Leeds Beckett University’s submission to this unit was among the largest in the country. The GPA was 3.25 (out of 4). The REF takes place approximately every seven years.

Our outstanding results included:

our research in numbers

  • 82%

of outputs were judged to be world-leading or internationally excellent (weighted 60%)

  • 100%

of our research environment (weighted 15%) was seen as being conducive to producing research of world-leading or internationally excellent quality and impact

  • 100%

of the Unit’s research impact was world-leading (weighted 25%)

Commenting on the results, Professor Rhodri Thomas, Dean of School and Unit Steering Group member, stated: “I am delighted that the efforts of so many colleagues have been recognised in this way. Several of them contributed the maximum of five publications and it is testimony to our culture that both Heads of Department – who have multifaceted workloads and operate in a intensively dynamic environment – also made their contribution. Perhaps above all, the result vindicates what we have been trying to do and will stimulate us to improve over the next planning period.

Unit 24 results for all universities, including LBU, are available on the REF website.
