The visit from Chris was arranged to help students with an assignment they have been set as part of the Hospitality Operations Management module on their course – ‘Writing a Business Recovery Plan for a failing luxury hotel’.

During his presentation Chris spoke about his incredible career journey working in several 5-star hotels, including the luxurious Whatley Manor Hotel and Spa in the Cotswolds. At just 32, Chris is one of the youngest 5-star hoteliers in the UK.

Chris really inspired and captured the imagination of our students, sharing his passion for the hotel industry and the work of his team. He asked them the following question:

WHAT IS THE MOST COMMON QUESTION I GET ASKED ABOUT MY JOB?

And that is…

“WHO’S THE BEST PERSON THAT YOU’VE MET?”

In his answer Chris name checked an extensive list of celebrities, including a former Prime Minister (Theresa May), who none of our international students knew, and Rowan Atkinson, aka Mr Bean, who was recognised by everyone with a giggle.

He also said that the best people he has ever met are: “My Team. Without them the hotel would not have achieved as much as it has. My philosophy is simple. It’s all about ‘Building a Grand Family”.

In just three years Chris and his Grand Family has transformed the reputation of the Grand Hotel, resulting in several prestigious awards and accolades including:

  • Catey’s Hotel of the Year 2022
  • Legacy Restaurant 3 AA Rosettes
  • The Sunday Times Best Places to Work 2023

The Grand also offers several training and career development opportunities for both our UG and PG students. As you could imagine there was a lengthy queue of students clamouring for his business card after the presentation had finished.
